The history and present of tourism in Austria are literally materialised in its tourist building culture in all the ambivalence inherent in tourism as an economic factor and social phenomenon. Therefore, the examination of the topic of “tourist building culture” opens up a broad spectrum of illustrative material and the resulting questions regarding the challenges that tourism-influenced regions will face in the future with regard to the socio-ecological transformation that is also imminent in the tourism sector.

Under the motto PerlMUT (pearl courage) May 2024 is defined by the encounter between traditional pearl hoods and contemporary glass and textile art. Artist in residence Shae Bishop (US) is characterised in his work as a textile and ceramic designer, by his unusual perspective and courageous questioning of traditional clothing habits. He interacts with the Japanese glass artist Shige Fujishiro, who often uses tiny Japanese glass beads in his works and performances. In the special exhibition PerlMUT in the Hand. Werk.Haus Salzkammergut, their art works enter into an exchange with often traditionally produced objects from craftspeople, schools and interdisciplinary interfaces.
On Sat, 25.5.24, the opening day of PerlMUT, participants of the Upper Austria-wide pearl hood and gold band meeting can get to know the artists‘ working methods. On this day, visitors can expect a large number of regional and international exhibitors and makers, who interpret the PerlMUT motto in a variety of ways.
Until 2015, the traditional bookbindery „Fettinger“ was active in Bad Goisern. Their workshop, revitalised in the Hand.Werk.Haus Salzkammergut, is used by Elisabeth Öggl, artist and specialist for books in an artistic context, during her residency, where she works with found materials materials from Stephaneum, a vacant school building in Bad Goisern.
She will meetsAltmünster artist Marie Liebl, who creates BOOK OF SCALA in the Hand.Werk.Haus bookbindery, as an artistic chronicle of the residencies in the year of the European Capital of Culture. Elisabeth provides Bundesgymnasium Bad Ischl with initial insights into the art of bookbinding. At a public workshop she presents the art of box making. The Saalfelden bookbinder Christian Fuchs, a specialist in contemporary bookbinding and its communication, also offers a workshop for Bundesgymnasium Bad Ischl.
Finally, an overview of the world of artists‘ books is provided by a lecture and an exhibition by Susanne Padberg (Galerie Druck & Buch).
The Zeitreise – Time Travel project focuses on the little-known historical photographers of the Salzkammergut and juxtaposes them with newly created comparative-interpretative photographic works by international artists.
Memory is subjective and can also be deceptive. The Museum of Memory exhibits objects with history and stories from the original collection of the Lederermayerhaus in Unterach am Attersee. These objects have been selected and redesigned by the artist Amina Handke.
The museum thus offers many opportunities for participatory speculation: what is original, genuine, true, history, memory, value, art?
By purchasing these objects, you can contribute to owning unique artefacts from Unterach and at the same time support the preservation of the Lederermayerhaus.

This theatre performance focuses on looted art and everyday objects from former Jewish property in the region. The personal stories associated with these objects can be experienced in public spaces. A fictitious radio station will be set up at the weekly markets in Bad Aussee and Altaussee during market hours, seemingly broadcasting a live programme based on these stories and also incorporating what is happening at the market.

Following the successful launch of “Ischl, denkmalerisch”, the “Damals?” project is taking the next step. We invite you to explore Ischl’s urban space on Saturday, 6 April. What stories do the monuments and memorials tell and how do they relate to National Socialism?
We have received suggestions for this, which we are very happy to take up. In addition to the connection between Franz Lehár and Bad Ischl, the public memory of Oscar Straus and the Villa Haenel-Pancera will be the focus of our tour.
