Artist, choreographer and performer Grace Ellen Barkey was born in Surabaya (Indonesia). Barkey lives and works in Brussels, and is co-founder of the artists’ company Needcompany (1986). Her work sits on the borderline between theatre, dance, performance and visual art. Frank Zappa’s motto was ‘to me, absurdity is the only reality’, and this is also a common thread in Barkey’s absurd, performative work.

Grace Ellen Barkey’s performances are characterised by an excess of, or lack of, something. She always creates a world filled with strange, sensual, absurd figures. Clownlike and grotesque exaggerations that lie somewhere between animal and human, amorphous and monstrous; and that always balance on a fragile paradox where melancholy, harmony, humour and hope inexplicably take shape.

As a performer, Grace Ellen Barkey appears in the work of Jan Lauwers, where she provides commentary on the contents of his performances as an Indian princess, among others, for example in Caligula (1998), No Comment (2001), and The blind poet (2015).

Grace Ellen Barkey is also steadily building on her visual oeuvre. Her most recent installations attest to a stillness. An internalisation. “The unspoken, that which is not revealed, is expressed in the absurd but also in the mystical”, says Grace Ellen Barkey. Both the delirious imagination and the stillness are attempts to express the unspeakable. In these installations, the spectator’s senses are not overloaded and overstimulated with absurd, grotesque and surreal images, whose interconnection cannot be grasped at a purely rational level. The starting point of her installations is Grace Ellen Barkey’s personal relationship with nature and its transience. In 2021 she decolonised her name and used the name of her grandmother, Grace Tjang. In this way she allows a different history to vibrate through her identity as an artist.

Her visual work has recently been exhibited at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (Rotterdam), Poortersloge (Bruges), CC Strombeek, UZ Jette and Coup de Ville (Sint-Niklaas), M HKA (Antwerp), mumok (Vienna), Berliner Festspiele (Berlin), EcoC24 (Salzkammergut),…

Grace Ellen Barkey, together with Lot Lemm, was part of the artist duo Lemm&Barkey. Their work was exhibited at BOZAR (Brussels), Benaki museum (Athens), Musée des Arts décoratifs (Paris), CC Strombeek, Dr. Guislain museum (Ghent), and Triënnale Hasselt / Superbodies, among others.

Finnish singer Karoliina Kantelinen is one of the most important interpreters of Karelian yoik songs. These archaic, often wordless songs tell stories or simply memories of familiar gestures, but they are also songs to animals and natural phenomena. For the Sami people in northern Scandinavia in particular, joiks have been ritual, shamanic songs for centuries and have been repeatedly banned by the authorities. As an ethnomusicologist, Karoliina Kantelinen also researches these songs, which she performs to a wider audience in world-famous ensembles such as Värttinä.

deeLinde (Austria) is a descendant of a renowed dynasty of folk musicians from Styria. Let it be alpine traditions, classical music, the rock, pop or freestyle genre: the co-founder of the band Netnakisum is a mistress of groove on her cello.

As a freelance musician, deeLinde sings and plays in numerous projects, ensembles and productions. The Sydney Opera House and distant countries such as Egypt, USA, China and Pakistan were, along with many European stages, destinations for extensive concert tours. Her own projects include the internationally acclaimed string trio Netnakisum, with whom she released five albums, the Kusimanten and the recently founded duo deeLinde & Emiliano Sampaio.

She won the World Music Award in 2014 with the band Madame Baheux and the New German Jazz Prize in 2019 with Shreefpunk. deeLinde is known for her versatility in addition to her main instrument, cello and vocals, and is at home on many instruments.

Her roots, which are based in folk music, are still an important to her and her projects. She teaches dance music at workshops and yodeling.  The yodeling learning APP or the international online yodeling workshop for the Arab region is one of deeLinde’s extraordinary successes.

deeLinde is also the proud mother of three children and is currently studying music therapy at KUG.

Thierry Oussou (Benin/Netherlands) studied Art at the Rijksakademie in the Netherlands. The visual and conceptual artist’s practice encompasses a variety of media. He researches tangible and intangible heritage that has been forgotten by institutions or local communities and seeks to understand erasures and continuities of the past in the present. From cotton workers to public transport drivers, his visual investigation aims to emphasize, or rather turn visible the different terms of labor that exist, and how they affect the society we live in.

For instance, his recent project Equilibrium Wind shines a light on the role of cotton workers worldwide. Cotton has a long and varied history, and is still the frequent subject of international debate on topics such as poverty reduction, agricultural subsidies, and the Strategic Development Goals (…) Through encounters with the people who underlie the cotton industry, Oussou’s approach can be seen as a proposal engendering hope for an ideal production and distribution cycle. (…)

His project Impossible is Nothing began by fabricating and burying a replica of the royal throne of Béhanzin, who was the king of Dahomey before it was colonized by France. Much later, Oussou organized a series of performances, including an excavation of the site by archaeological students, surfacing conceptual issues that underly debate on the return of plundered art and artifacts.

In December 2023, Oussou spent a month in residence in the Operndorf Afrika to work with the weavers, potters and founders of Ziniaré in Burkina Faso and to create pieces for the theatre production of DECONFINING.

Ava Binta Giallo (Germany/Guinea) received her training, among others, at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. The visual artist, poet and analogue filmmaker lives and works between Vienna/Austria and Mindelo/Cabo Verde. Giallo’s focus lies on the craft of weaving, both technically and metaphorically, to create structure and a web of connections. She also works with the symbol of the spiral, the snail (Festspielhaus Afrika). A form that symbolises a freedom of possibilities in its openness.

The artistic practice of Ava Binta Giallo is based on intuitive, sensory searching. Through painting, film, sculpture, and installation, they explore the pictorial and the surrounding physical space. Conceiving the works as topographies of moods and atmospheres, the process-oriented work gives rise to compositions that emphasize the interconnectedness of all material and immaterial forms. Through partially spontaneous gestures and ritualized procedures, as well as purposefully layered material, Giallo emphasizes the importance of the intangible as a figurative element. They explore the liminal areas between the visible and the invisible, canvas and motif, as well as living body and architectural space as a vehicle for an experimental exploration around issues of memory and trace.

The kitchen as a creative and social production space.
Founded by a collective of artists and cultural practitioners, the Frankfurt institution has been offering a lively platform for exchange and dialogue for almost twenty years, repeatedly at different locations and at various international festivals. It sees itself less as a conventional restaurant and more as a social meeting place in the high-rise canyons of the banking metropolis, where cooking, food and art are combined with good conversation. The artists Thomas Friemel and Michael Riedel founded freitagsküche in Frankfurt am Main. It all started with the desire to meet and exchange ideas informally, without a specific occasion and independent of exhibition openings or other events, not only among artists themselves, but also with other creative artists and free spirits – in keeping with the salon idea. The artists themselves catered for the physical well-being of the guests with the dishes they cooked. Today, Frankfurt’s art and culture scene continues to meet here, as well as international guests and travellers passing through. With its location in the railway station district, it is a meeting place for people from various cultural, economic and political milieus, a “communication factory” that invites guests to concerts, readings and exhibitions in an informal setting alongside table discussions. The two artists describe their idea as follows: “Usually, the process of cooking in a restaurant disappears into secrecy. In the freitagsküche, it is open. The artists of the evening inspire the kitchen with their own suggestions, thus building a bridge between art and cooking and providing the first topic of conversation along the way. “In view of current events and the demands of the present, places for exchange, formats for discourse and platforms for developing strategies for living together are more important than ever. The idea of the Friday Kitchen is an elementary one: A collective event where art and life form a culinary connection.

Manuel Gorkiewicz graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with a degree in painting and graphics and studied social anthropology and philosophy at the university there.
He is an artist, teaches at the University of Art in Linz and lives in Vienna. Numerous invitations to national and international solo and group exhibitions testify to the high regard in which his conceptual and multimedia oeuvre is held. In his work, Gorkiewicz explores the interfaces and interrelationships between the art world on the one hand and the consumer and everyday world on the other. In doing so, he not only deals intensively with the real and possible history of representation of his respective material, but also acquires technical expertise in order to be able to work with it. His gaze extends both into art spaces and into their supposedly trivial equivalents in everyday culture.

He combines Gorkiewicz’s interest in the formal language and aesthetics of everyday objects with a pseudo-scientific, meticulous approach in order to raise questions about representation in both concrete and figurative contexts. Through their exaggerated and over-precise form of presentation, the objects lose their original purpose, while at the same time the artist appropriates these objects and their original legibility.

The artist allows himself a change of context by crossing over into music, thus expanding his professional field of activity.

Parastou Forouhar is one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Iranian art. The artist and activist was born in Tehran, Iran. She successfully completed an art degree at the university there until 1990, followed by postgraduate studies at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main from 1992 to 1994.

In 1998, a decisive event occurred that had a lasting impact on Forouhar’s life and work: Her parents, two leading opposition politicians, were murdered in their home by the Iranian secret service. The annual trips she has since made to her native country to commemorate the crime have become an act of resistance. Her artistic work is also decisively influenced by the murder. With drawings and photographs, computer-animated image sequences and installations, she reflects on social issues and grievances, drawing on the patterns and colours of Persian tradition. In 2000, Parastou Forouhar presented the ornament as camouflage for political statements at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin as her artistic signature and has continued to develop it ever since. The artist’s life and work are exemplary of the transcultural approach to traditional oriental and occidental formal languages.

The internationally recognised artist, who has lived in Germany since 1991, is also known for her political commitment against repression and violence and as a mediator between cultures. From 2019 to 2024, she taught a class in Fine Arts at the Mainz University of Art and Design as a Gutenberg Research Fellowship Professor, bringing her specific transcultural perspective on international contemporary art discourse to her teaching. In 2022, she was patron of the Days of Exile Frankfurt am Main and is a founding member of the collective Art-Cultur-Action.
