Isa Stein studied architecture as well as art in Graz, Paris and New York. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and is represented in renowned collections. Her studio was honoured with the State Prize for Design. She has also been recognised with national and international awards. She works in Vienna and at Lake Traunsee.
23 light dresses
23 light dresses symbolically stand for the 23 places of the cultural capital Bad Ischl 2024. The 23 light dresses turned up in parallel at these places and are like an Olympic fire.
The light dresses illuminate the environment. The light is transmitted through the wearer.
180 light bulbs are worn on the body. The dress is an object, when switched off it remains a sculpture. Through the wearer, the dress merges with the body.
Dresses inform the body – the light dresses, however, absorb the environment into their “object existence” through the glow. Passers-by and spectators become protagonists and part of the performance. Unpredictable situations can arise. In any case, it is about illuminating, about the beauty in and around us.
To bring light into our lives is the statement of the dress.
The dresses themselves are 35 kg and are held by cable ties. The wearer is reminded by the weight and pressure of the cable ties to stay in your body and be very aware of the steps. The focus is necessary to move the clothes properly. The body is transformer in this case. Light is not brought indiscriminately, light clarifies.
The main time for the light dress to work is darkness.
