About the project

Each year, the ice sound concerts offer extraordinary artistic performances. These fantastic concerts take place in one of the most notable “concert halls” in the world – the Parzival Cathedral in the Dachstein-Rieseneishöhle Obertraun (Dachstein Giant Ice Cave Obertraun). Limited to a group of approximately 200 audience members, the spectators experience the artists up close and personal. For the schedule of programming primarily arranged for tourists, two commissions for compositions for contemporary music are being supported by the 2024 European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut. The goal is to sustainably provide the event series with contemporary music after 2024 as well – 2024 is intended to be the starting point for the modern programming; premieres will take place in the ice cave for the very first time that year. In the future, the intention is for this format to become an annual gathering of composers and musicians who will artistically work with the unique characteristics of the ice cave.
