Martin Rauch did not come to earthen building through architecture, but through his training and first work as a ceramist, kiln builder and sculptor. In Africa, his artistic impulse gained global perspectives. Sculpting with clay grew into the aspiration of building artistic design with earth. The modeling of tiles and stoves turned into sculpting and constructing on a larger scale: the reshaping of the ground into a habitable (spatial) sculpture. From the beginning, he was particularly interested in the rammed earth technique, a process in which the material is not subsequently disguised or embellished.
