Since the beginning of colonial rule in Asia and Africa, there has also been a history of cultural and political counter-designs for the liberation and renewal of colonised societies. This 200-year-old critique of the “West” has brought important intellectuals, such as the Indian Rabindranath Tagore (first Asian Nobel Prize winner for literature), as well as leaders of national liberation movements such as Hồ Chí Minh, Mao Zedong or Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi – and ultimately also masterminds for the renewal of Muslim societies up to Islamist currents. The musical counterpoint to the impulse is provided by a local folk music group in the tradition of Eigensinn.
