The second part of the NEW SALT event series, which is being implemented as part of Bad Ischl Salzkammergut European Capital of Culture 2024, will bring experimental and punk sounds and pop interventions to the Kitzmantelfabrik in Vorchdorf on 18 November 2023 from 8:30 pm.

Choreographer, drummer and singer Stina Force will open the evening loudly with her one-woman punk band with humour and relentlessness. Robert Pockfuß and Manu Mayr – known as part of the band 5KHD – will present their duo schtum with skilful interference and feedback using bass and guitar, before FARCE performs their sophisticated pop gems. To round things off, Gischt will deliver one of their rare, eclectic DJ sets.

21.00 Stina Force concert/performance
22.00 schtum concert
23.00 FARCE Live AV-Performance
23.50 Gischt DJ set

PROGRAMMDETAILS

FARCE (DE) is just as much at home in the feminist underground as in the international avant-garde. FARCE aka Veronika König, who is reminiscent of bands like Robyn, LCD Soundsystem and St. Vincent, produces an intoxicating mix of catchy and experimental ideas that find a home in theatrical and extravagant pop music. Their latest album “not to regress” features none other than Soap & Skin. After appearances at the renowned Sziget and Primavera Sound festivals, FARCE can now be experienced live at NEW SALT.
farce.cool

schtum (AT) The music of schtum evokes the feeling of abstract movement in sound. The duo plays live on instruments amplified by distortion and reverb, transforming microtonal interference and feedback into dark, often brutal electronic sequences. The dynamic contrast between unadulterated expression and clinical precision is the driving force in their music.

Stina Force (SE) is a choreographer, performance artist and one-woman punk band that must be experienced live. Her live performance is relentless and no two performances are the same, everything is created in the moment. With improvised vocal experiments, grotesque monologues and hammering drumbeats, she first pushes her audience powerfully against the wall, then it eats out of her hand. Stina Force skilfully plays with stable and unstable states, her performances are full of tension, humour and nerve-wracking energy. Stina Force recently gave a rousing performance at the Vienna Festival.

Gischt (AT) presents one of their rare and eclectic, as well as brutal DJ sets at the end of the evening.

To kick off the event series, NEW SALT brings sprawling and unusual musical positions to Ebensee. Two very different venues will be played: the established and internationally renowned Ebensee cinema and the charming, industrially appealing Alte Weberei.

The drummer Katharina Ernst will open NEW SALT Ebensee with a solo concert in the Alte Weberei. Super Nase & Co will then challenge our perception in a performative way, Séverine Ballon will play one of her multi-layered cello concerts and Dorian Concept will show how much virtuosity and lightness there is in the keyboard.
At Kino Ebensee, Anika presents her solo project reminiscent of Velvet Underground or Mazzy Star, exceptional drummer Lukas König plays a duo with turntablist Mariam Rezaei, while BR-Laser transforms the space with sophisticated laser projections. Melt Downer, the noiserock trio around Wolfi Möstl, draw the brute conclusion of the evening.

A summer in the early eighties. Julia, known as Juli, the headmaster’s daughter, is back from boarding school and meets her first love Robert, the son of a scythe-working family, again at the village fair. He immediately realises that she is still wearing the ring he gave her. It is completely worn out, a cheap plastic thing from a chewing gum machine, full of hope for the future. He had given it to her on the last evening when she left for boarding school. Two years later, she still wears it.

The music theater project “Hammer” focuses on an upheaval in the history of the scythe industry. More about this project on salzkammergut-2024.at

Peter and the Wolf One of the most frequently performed classical works in the world, Sergei Prokofiev’s musical fairy tale tells the story of Peter, who lives with his grandfather in rural Russia. One day, when Peter forgets to close the garden gate, a wolf from the nearby forest seizes his chance and comes dangerously close to Peter’s house and his animals…

Das ganze Programm als Booklet (pdf)

Stadttheater Gmunden, Theatergasse 7

Main hall on the ground floor

  • 20 h Opening by Tom Neuwirth and the Capital of Culture team
Tom Neuwirth has toured the world as Conchita and has inspired thousands. He has returned to support and accompany the Capital of Culture as a member of the committee, and his words will span an arc from the opening in January to the final departure of the Capital of Culture
  • 20:15 – 21 h Counter and Strings. Alois Mühlbacher and the String Quartet. (concert)
The self-definition of the 4 gentlemen from Linz is already a real eye-opener: JazzRockClassicalCrossover String Quartet. And then there is the great countertenor Alois Mühlbacher. A sonic experience and an exciting encounter from Queen to Vivaldi.
  • 21 – 21:45 Timpani, triangle and tam-tam. The incredible world of Vivi Vassileva. (percussion)
The young percussionist Vivi Vassileva regularly sets off from her home in Ebensee to wow audiences in concert halls around the world.  Together with guitarist Lucas Campara Diniz, she has created a multi-sound spectacle for the Capital of Culture that puts composers such as Iannis Xenakis in a new, fresh light.
  • 22 – 23 h HipHop meets Pop, Indie joins Rap. Sharktank (concert)
Hip hop meets pop, indie joins rap: Katrin, Mile and Marco not only overcome and combine genres in their interplay – as Sharktank, they open up “a niche on the German-speaking music market that we didn’t know existed until now” (DIFFUS); where playful feel-good beats and light-hearted instrumentals meet conscious rap and melodic vocals, the Viennese trio has found its colourful, independent sound – jump in & swim along!
  • 23:15 – 01 h Doris UHLICH (DJ performance) Every Body Boom
The choreographer, performer and DJ Doris Uhlich invites you to an energetic night of dance in which her artistic ideas resonate. • 01 h – end Miss Ivanka T. (DJ performance, Salzkammerqueer hosted by Aufbruch, Salzkammergut!)
Icon, legend & sensation Miss Ivanka T. With a passport from Austria and a heart in Berlin, she is the symbiosis of the cheeky country mouse with the Berlin city brat in one. From pop, hosting, TV to make-up, she is at home wherever dialect & diversity is allowed to reign & people want to forget the outside world for an hour.

Bar on the 1st floor

  • 20 – 23 h korli (DJ set)
Growing up in the 90s – the decade of CDs – Klara aka korli’s love of music began with her parents’ CD collection. Instead of vinyl stores, LIBROs were bought empty and, in the absence of alternatives, 30-second snippets were downloaded from the first music sites on the Internet. The CDs have disappeared, the love of music and the data size of the downloaded music have grown. Their sets build a bridge from R’n’B to hip hop to house and electronic bass music, and sometimes a tribute to the decade of CDs awaits at the end of this bridge.
  • 23 h – end DJ Rich Parents (DJ set, Salzkammerqueer hosted by Aufbruch, Salzkammergut!)
Salzkammerqueer hosted by Aufbruch, Salzkammergut! DJ Rich Parents plays pop to hyperpop but mainly goes off, brings not only queer bangers but the whole party. DJ RP’s best friends are Kylie and Kim, which sums it up, so treat them like a slut and you won’t get them out of your head.

Kinosaal 1. Floor

  • 20 h – midnight Let’s go, Salzkammergut! Model region for rural Europe
Documentation European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024, Chris Gütl

Former drugstore in the city centre, Rathausplatz 6

  • From 17 h JUKEBOX with ABSINTH BAR by God’s Entertainment (Analogue Juke Box)
K20, J14, U07, A11 are the abbreviations used on menus in popular restaurants. They allow us to communicate with each other and, in the best case, get served what we want. JUKEBOX works on the same principle, which nowadays can only be found on eBay or Willhaben under rarities and golden prices. JUKE BOX by God’s Entertainment will open our eyes, mouths and ears again and at the same time make everyone emotionally satisfied. Our JUKE BOX is analogue, mechanical, speaks, takes 2 EURO, winks and has every song in stock that has somehow been documented in the last official 6000 years of human history. From Katy Perry to Vangelis. Forward into the past!
ABSINTH BAR – RESEARCH SPACES FOR PSYCHOACTIVIST STATES
What does it mean to be in a normal state? Mere conditioning to the familiar or being in line with syllogistic logic? If you are in the four-sided stands of a football stadium, for example, you wait spellbound for the slow motion replay of the goal or a disputed offside position. Standing at the checkout of a supermarket, do you immediately rule out the possibility that the overworked cashier is a German? After a moment’s thought, however, you quickly realise that the search for a logical conclusion seems illogical after all. Absinth Bar offers nothing that we are used to, it stands outside of any logic and learned sensuality. It refuses to keep its usual opening hours and does not adhere to any other conventional agreements. The meaningfulness of intoxication, the essence of the evening and the truthfulness of the psychoactive state are on the menu at HEURE VERTE.

Stadtpfarrkirche, Kirchenplatz 5

  • 20:30 – 21:30 h Instrumental Art Pop by Anna Lang and Alois Eberl
Sinfonia De Carnaval – that’s Anna Lang and Alois Eberl on cello, trombone, accordion, percussion, electronics and voices. Instrumental art pop that knows no boundaries: elements of jazz and pop meet electronic sound universes and the full sound spectrum of classical playing techniques. Violoncello, voice, trombone, percussion and accordion in a unique and newly defined sound!

Evangelische Kirche, Georgstraße 9

  • 19:30 – 21 h Magdalena Hasibeder, organ I Georg Hasibeder, vibraphone I Jonathan Six, marimba: The Beauty and the Beat. Fireworks with organ and percussion.
The Hasibeder siblings have made different careers from Linz. Organist Magdalena Hasibeder continues to enliven the local music scene with surprising encounters. Here she fuses the enchanting organ of the Evangelical Church with the large instruments of percussionists Jonathan Six and Georg Hasibeder  a truly fraternal firework display.

Bürgerspitalkirche, Kößlmühlgasse 1

  • 21 – 24 h Holy Hydra with AVBRUCH
AVBRUCH is an audio-visual installation that renegotiates the theme of new beginnings in an intense live performance. Here, past and future meet, traditions are broken, a dialogue of extremes unfolds: light meets dark, loud meets quiet, sacred meets profane, yin meets yang. The hospital church becomes an interface, a control centre between the worlds – a place where boundaries become blurred. Holy Bim Bam. Bum.
Ford Escort & Jens Vetter (Sound Artists), Robert Huemer & Tim Niedermeier (Visual Artists), Amanda Augustin & Lorena Höllrigl – Hydra Kulturverein (Artistic Concept)

Stadtplatz Schiffsanlegestelle, Schiffsangelesteg am Rathausplatz

  • 19 – 21 h Plateau Blo meets Urban Sauna Club meets Kombucha by Studio Clemens Bauder, DJ Sets by raumarbeiterinnen & friends
At the end of the European Capital of Culture project Plateau Blo, the floating sauna on Lake Traun by the artists’ collective raumarbeiterinnen and in collaboration with the University of Art and Design Linz, we’re turning up the heat once again. Also taking part is the Kombucha Bar by Studio Clemens Bauder, architect and graduate of the University of Art, as well as the residence guests, Martin and Flora Szurcsik-Nimmervoll, who will translate the sauna to Rathausplatz with a wolf as an expansive construction and intervention. DJ sets by raumarbeiterinnen & friends embed the installation by the lake in nocturnal sounds. “The right dance outfit for the evening is an eye-catching bathrobe over a winter jacket.”

Café Brandl, Rathausplatz 1

  • From 21:15 h DJ sets by Drumfabrik (DJs: Asense, Cerf, Critical Contents, Dvnc, Nikasun, Rawtid, Voltare, Zappla)
With the mission to promote the electronic music scene in Upper Austria, the Drumfabrik cultural association was founded by Zappla in Vorchdorf around 7 years ago. Dozens of events with international stars of the scene later, the girls and boys are paying another visit to the town of Gmunden and are looking forward to a night of dancing, passion and of course: drum & bass!

Bar Zum blauen Affen, Kirchengasse 8

  • 20:30 – 24 h Literaturrausch hosted by Wirtshauslabor – readings and spoken word performances
An empty cultural venue becomes a wild literary salon for one evening. Under the name “Literaturrausch”, the successful Capital of Culture project Wirtshauslabor is making its final appearance for 2024. Curated by Magdalena Stammler and Christina Jaritsch, the following authors will be taking to the stage: Lydia Haider, Mercedes Kornberger, Jacinta Nandi, Jörg Piringer and Magdalena Stammler.

K-Hof Museum, Kammerhofgasse 8

  • 10 – 24 h Exhibition City of Ceramics – Local heroes
The K-Hof, the Kammerhof Museum Gmunden, shows the exhibition Klo&So. Admission: 6€

Theodor Detter, Georgstraße 29

  • 17 – 20 h pm Kids & Kunst: Malen im Museum, Theodor Detter

Tram, Stern & Hafferl

  • Experiencing art, Traunseetram stops become public art spaces
  • On the way, a (living) audio theatre in the Traunseetram

Under the motto  “Ausdrahn:  Village Party & Volxfest” performers and musicians from the EU project Village Party and the Volxfest project, together with the three European Capitals of Culture 2024 Bad Ischl Salzkammergut, Bodø in Norway and Tartu in Estonia, are organising a joint evening.

The evening is a mixture of traditional dance floor, games and party. Estonian, Norwegian, Austrian and Italian traditional music and dances meet contemporary forms. It is about elements and rules of celebration as well as playful spontaneous moments and stereotypes. Because the art and power of celebration lies in the balance between the rules that define the exact sequence of festivities and free, spontaneous, intuitive forms of expression that express joy and affection among the revellers, high spirits, but also sadness and anger. It is about European commonalities of celebration as well as differences, about personal feelings of home and global humanity. Whether traditional or artistic – the planned meets the spontaneous, choreography meets the free dance floor. The audience is invited to take part in games, competitions, rhythmic and musical elements, traditional dances and funny movements. Forms of celebration from the Arctic, Estonia and Austria are used that are no longer common today. Using material from archival sources, they will be reconstructed and embedded in contemporary social contexts to inspire new developments – a Future of Folkart.

Under the motto “The Art and Power of Celebration”, participants and visitors will experience a culture of togetherness and cultural affiliations from different perspectives. The aim of “Ausdrahn – Village Party & Volxfest” is to incorporate diversity as well as international and intersectional perspectives into regional folk cultural forms of expression. In the artistic process, questions about origin and developments in social, contemporary and international discourses are answered differently than in conventional settings.

Given norms of celebration are taken up, questioned and combined with new, diverse forms of expression. These hybrid forms are intended to contribute to a better understanding of different people, reduce fear of change and open up a personal approach to celebrating through body awareness.

Participating artists:
Farah Deen, Irene Egger (artistic research), Matteo Haitzmann, Sigurd-Johan Heide, Tone Ingvaldsen, Johanna- Adele Jüssi, Simon Mayer, Ole Nilssen, Espen Nordheim, Markus Prieth, Patric Redl, Hannah Shakti-Bühler, Mario* Sinnhofer, Irma-Maria Troy, Hannah Maria Wimmer

Village Party meets Volxfest is a joint project by Art in Motion/Simon Mayer, Kartellet / Sigurd-Johan Heide, Johanna-Adele Jüssi Estonia and Austrian Folk Music and Song Society / Irene Egger.

Two people who express their attitude, their spirit of resistance, their love for people and their occasional amazement at them in their art: One draws and paints, the other sings and plays his accordion.

Haderer’s caricatures are razor-sharp, rich in detail, trenchant and irresistible. Caricatures familiar from newspapers and numerous publications are now projected onto the wall and presented by the master himself. With a story or two to go with them. In between, Hans Peter Falkner, a maestro on the accordion and part of the musical duo Attwenger for decades, sings and plays music. In his dances and songs, he combines unique linguistic artistry with a playful squeezebox sound. Haderer and Falkner rock each other through this evening: a colourful cartoon show with music, brains and humour.

The Mirabell Dirndln clearly show that music connects and brings worlds together. The four musicians, whose roots lie in Tyrol, Carinthia and Lower Bavaria, owe their coming together to music. Together they share a deep passion for alpine folk music – violin, harmonica, harp and double bass are their faithful companions with which they bring the authentic sounds of folk music to life. Their music is characterised by new and old melodies that transport the audience directly to the picturesque landscape of the Alps.

It is probably the mixture of home-made arrangements and original compositions, the love of Oberkrainer sounds, but also the awareness of the drive of old folk tunes – and last but not least, a large portion of love for music that unites all six musicians.

For “Abendrotleuchten”, Alpentales will be playing their new programme of the same name, spinning golden threads of sound into the night sky. They tell of stargazers, Swiss Zäuerli and King Laurin’s rose garden and set undiscovered stories from balmy alpine nights to music with drums, violin, trumpet, harmonica and double bass. With their musical anecdotes, they light up the night sky.

An incomparable alpine sound that combines tradition and modernity in a new way.

Following the great success in 2022 & 2023, some of the most exciting local artists from the worlds of classical and folk music will once again come together this year for the Christmas concert inspired by Franz Welser-Möst as part of Hausmusik Roas. Folk music and classical music – performed at the highest musical level – merge into a touching whole. Through sensitive interplay and authentic music-making, the artists want to focus on the unifying and touching aspects of art and create a festive atmosphere with the desire to bring music to where it belongs: to the people, directly from heart to heart.

In the dreamlike ambience of the parish church of St. Nikolaus Bad Ischl, these subtle musicians will succeed in doing just that.

This concert will once again be recorded live in front of an audience and broadcast as an ORF III Christmas Day concert in the “Erlebnis Bühne” series on 25 December 2024.

Under the direction of its long-standing chief conductor Franz Welser-Möst, the Cleveland Orchestra enjoys the reputation of being the best orchestra in the USA, but perhaps also in the world. To live up to this claim, the ensemble tours extensively year after year in the world’s most important concert halls. The artistic essence of these talented musicians can now also be experienced in Gmunden with masterpieces of chamber music. The word “chamber” in this case does not refer to a smaller concert hall, but to a room within a house, and the composers also conceived these works for domestic music-making.

Thus, this concert also sends a musical greeting from Cleveland to the concert series Hausmusik Roas conceived by Franz Welser-Möst, extends this journey by one stop and invites you to linger over masterpieces of “classical house music”.

A photo exhibition by a courageous young female artist & footballer: Women’s football is growing, the game is getting faster and better and in international comparison the ÖFB women’s team overtook the men’s team years ago. Nevertheless, the distribution of funds remains unfair and there is a lack of awareness for women’s football. The art project “Women’s soccer without boundaries”, which is supported by Fairplay and 100% SPORT, shows the hurdles and positive stories from the world of women’s football. It includes interviews and photos of players from the national team and grassroots sport as well as a collection of videos and other multimedia media. The pictures are exhibited in the Otelo Bad Ischl (Bad Ischl municipality). In addition, the pictures are also shown in public spaces: Lara Krampf sets up football goals in the town, which exhibit the pictures printed on tarpaulins and stretched into the goals.

At the concert: TENTACULA – The name says it all!
And this neologism delivers what it promises: dark, reverb-soaked melodies and gripping riffs result in a unique mixture, somewhere between heavy jazz and surf doom with lots of twang and oomph and an unmistakable voice that – siren-like – immediately casts a spell over you!

Since there is no entry about TENTACULA in the Necronomicon so far, they decided to write their own story.
After their loud debut “TENTACULOVE” (2019), TENTACULA returned in 2022 with their second album “ESTRELLA DESTRUIDA”  (Spanish for destroyed star). The new album is even darker and more emotional than anything you’ve heard from TENTACULA before, but not a bit quieter. Goosebump moments guaranteed!”

Like the debut album, “Estrella Destruida” has been released on StoneFree Records on disc and CD. The deluxe version of the record comes with a graphic novel, which, like the cover, was drawn by Thomas Gasperlmair aka APlaceForTom, the author and initiator of THE RAW STUFF.

* 2023 marked the start of a new chapter for TENTACULA with a new line-up, which now includes Clemens Flachs-Braun on bass, Christian “Gigi” Gratt on trumpet and Christoph “Fizl” Hehn on drums to form a new whole around the already familiar core consisting of singer Penny Slick Perry and guitarist Markus “Chu” Kapeller.

Lacing their endeavours and their craft with landscapes and their lack thereof, Han-Gyeol, Paul and Alix will present a dance as invocation, a slow daily ethnographic practice that tiptoes on a piano’s keyboard, circumvoluting its keys through Han-Gyeol Lie and Paul Kotal’s combined technologies: a concert for the Salzkamergut.

How to rehearse forms of disengagement from (every) things that, in our daily forms of dancing and choreographing, working, crafting continue to reinstate cycles of violence, oppression, exhaustion?

The artist’s work focuses on the overlap of two sound traditions, which exist in the same Austrian region despite their different cultural backgrounds: traditional Austrian yodelling and traditional Buddhist chanting. The first tradition is practised by the inhabitants of Grünau im Almtal – storytellers, hunters and farmers – while the second is cultivated by the Buddhist community at the Gomde Centre in Scharnstein

Although these practices come from very different cultures, Kulenovics’ initiative aims to merge these two forms of expression into a single choir and musical composition. This endeavour aims to facilitate the exchange of vocal traditions and promote a collaborative soundscape. In addition, the project includes an artistic documentary film that follows the process of bringing these two communities and their singing practices together. The film aims to reflect the theme of local folklore of mythical interactions with nature through fictional performative actions inspired by regional fairy tales.

Hippies & Hunters

The project is the result of an intensive transdisciplinary research process that included interactions with the inhabitants of the two regions. It sheds light on the mutual scepticism and stereotypes that each group holds towards the other. The project seeks to overcome these initial misunderstandings by using the transcendent qualities of sound as a medium to promote deeper understanding.

Smirna Kulenovic is a transdisciplinary artist, researcher, filmmaker, lecturer and PhD candidate at the Berlin University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts. She is currently working with the Open Documentary Lab at MIT, the Ars Electronica Centre and the Bohemian Pavilion in Venice. Her international engagements include the Yale School of Architecture, the Yale School of Drama, Oxford, the Royal Institute of Arts Stockholm, the University of London, Syracuse University New York and others.
