born 1961 in Herford. In her diverse artistic practice, she works in various media such as sculpture, performance and video. Her works focus on social interaction on both an emotional and conceptual level. They interweave psychological and social references to create personal and collective statements. She lives in Berlin.

Following her school education, Asta Gröting began studying sculpture at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1981. In 1996 and 1997 she was a visiting professor at the Valand Art Academy in Gothenburg, at the Gesamthochschule Kassel and at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. Since 1997 she has been Professor of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Honoured with various prizes and scholarships – including the Otto Dix Prize in Gera in 1994 – Asta Gröting has been represented with her work in numerous international exhibitions since her student days. Her participation in the 8th Sydney Biennale “The Readymade Boomerang” and the Venice Biennale in 1990 is worthy of special mention. In 1994 she exhibited alongside Gerhard Richter and Rosemarie Trockel at the Biennale in São Paulo.
