Bidding process (Application)

Bidbook (Application book)

The application concept was developed in the Bidbook (Application). It is the basis for Bad Ischl to bear the title of European Capital of Culture 2024 together with the Salzkammergut region. After a multi-stage selection process, the European jury of experts decided in favor of the Bad Ischl banner location together with the region. The basis of this decision is the final application book, which defines the guidelines of the title year. It contains a first idea of the program including the core concept (SALZ.WASSER) and deals with questions around budget and management. The four central program lines (power of tradition, power of counterculture, impact of (hyper)tourism, and thirst for retreat) are also described in detail in it. They will guide us programmatically and in terms of content until 2024. The Bidbook can be freely downloaded here

Essence of the Bidbook

A concise summary clarifies the core of our cultural plans up to 2024 and beyond. In it, we answer the most important questions about the process leading up to the Capital of Culture year and give a foretaste of the exciting program. Enjoy reading!

Jury report

The report of the 12-member jury contains the evaluation of all 3 cities or regions that applied for the title “European Capital of Culture 2024” in Austria. Six criteria form the “framework” of the jury evaluation: the long-term strategy of the candidates, the artistic and cultural program, the European dimension, audience development or involvement of diverse population groups (“outreach”), management issues as well as the (political, financial, technical, etc.) implementation capacity of the candidate city or region.

Cultural Development Plan

Cultural Vision Salzkammergut 2030

“Culture makes the difference” is the motto of our Cultural Development Plan, which was made possible by the LEADER regions Regis, Traunstein and Ennstal-Ausseerland and was financed by the federal government, the EU, and the states of Upper Austria and Styria. The publication was developed with regional artists and cultural professionals in a bottom-up process during the application phase for European Capital of Culture 2024. The publication is available for free download here. The print version is available at the regional offices of the LEADER Traunstein region and Regis as well as at Office2024 (the headquarters of the Capital of Culture team).

Our vision for 2030: The Salzkammergut has developed into one of the most sought-after cultural “inclaves” in Europe. Culture is our new salt.

The Salzkammergut 2030 cultural development plan was drawn up as part of the LEADER cooperation project (Regis, Traunstein region and Ennstal-Ausseerland) in the period 2018-2020. The development of the vision for 2030 and the associated fields of action were coordinated with the application for the title of Capital of Culture. The Kulturvision 2030 plan will remain in place beyond the title year of 2024, providing a sustainable framework moving forwards after the Capital of Culture project.

The printed brochure is also available in our office for free.

EU-Monitoring Report

Monitoring Report 2023

The third and final monitoring of Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 took place in October 2023. The European expert jury questioned the team of Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 about the third monitoring report, which was submitted to the jury in advance. This monitoring report provided an overview of the progress of the project, with a focus – as in the second monitoring report – on the artistic programme, the long-term strategy of the project, management, outreach, communication and marketing and the implementation of the project.

6 months before our official Opening in 2024, we are on the final stretch of our preparations. The past few years have been turbulent, busy and challenging. But they have also been very inspiring and rewarding because significant changes in the cultural life of the region are already starting to show. The 3rd Monitoring Report describes the current status of the project and first results. It is available to download here.

Response of the European Expert Jury to the Monitoring Report 2023

The EU expert jury also published a response to our third monitoring report, in which the panel positively assessed the progress of the project and announced the decision to award the Melina Mercouri Prize to Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024.

Monitoring Report 2022

In June 2022, the second monitoring of Bad Ischl-Salzkammergut 2024 took place. In it, the jury that awarded the regional project the title of “European Capital of Culture” in 2019 questioned part of the Capital of Culture team about the progress of the project. In the run-up to the online discussion, the Capital of Culture organization submitted a comprehensive report on the project’s respective fields of work. The monitoring focuses in particular on the long-term strategy of the project, the artistic program, management issues, the involvement of the population, communication and the ability to implement.

Response of the European Expert Jury to the 2022 Monitoring Report

As part of the monitoring process, the EU jury checks whether continuity is ensured between the application phase and the Bidbook that won the bid and the implementation phase. The positive completion of the multi-year monitoring process is a prerequisite for receiving confirmation of the title “European Capital of Culture” at the beginning of the title year. The jury assessed the progress of the project as positive, especially against the background of the pandemic and other current challenges, such as the Ukraine conflict.

Monitoring Report 2020

The first monitoring report was written by the team and is available for free download here. This report shows all progress since winning the title in November 2019. It also contains the timetable for the next 2 years on the way to the title year in 2024. The European jury of experts, who awarded Salzkammergut the title “European Capital of Culture 2024” in November 2019, used this report for their extensive inquiries. In a question-and-answer meeting (Q&A) in September 2020, the team gave a further report on the progress and development of the project. The experts’ impression is consistently positive. We are on the right track towards 2024!

Monitoring milestones until June 2022 (DE)
