(*1970 in Madrid, Spain; lives and works in Madrid).
Fernando Sánchez Castillo studied philosophy and aesthetics, then fine arts in Madrid and soon became internationally renowned for his critical and subversive, yet always ironic and humorous sculptural installations. His bizarre and unsparing confrontation with the dictator Franco hit a political nerve and is still controversial in Spain. His works have been shown at MoMA PS1 in New York and at the biennials in São Paulo and Riga, among others. He is represented in Amsterdam by Tegenboschvanvreden and by Albarrán Bourdais Gallery in Madrid.
How Scurrealism Comes into the World
Where the real and the bizarre meet, “scurrealism” enters the world. This neologism comes from the Ebensee writer Walter Pilar, the instigator of the Villa Karbach art project. He and many other artists show works of unconventional power and intensity.
