Description

Chamber music in the Kölbl Hall

with works by N. Paganini and L.v. Beethoven.

The violinist and guitarist Niccolo Paganini is known for his unprecedented virtuosity and intense playing. But he not only played the guitar just as well and wrote virtuoso caprices, he also composed extensively for chamber music.

Brilliantly composed trios, string quartets and duets for violin and guitar are among his 250 compositions. These little-known treasures place the highest demands on the performers. However, the virtuosity never pushes itself too directly into the foreground. “Paganini’s chamber music is rather unknown,” says Benjamin Schmid, “and wrongly so, because it forms the heart of the composer Paganini, who was not only the most important violinist of all time, but also a great guitarist.

These works are characterized by clarity, rich melodic ideas, honesty and warmth. Virtuosity is included, but is no longer the main thing.” Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Duet with two obbligato eyeglasses” is played at the beginning. Paganini and Beethoven were contemporaries. Even though they never met, Paganini played Beethoven’s works and was influenced by them.

His innovative compositional style and musical views are indicative of the extraordinary balance between virtuoso soloist and sensitive composer.
