Description

Under the title "Ceramics between time and space", Gmunden aims to continue to live up to its already established reputation as a city of ceramics on a contemporary level.

Under the title “Ceramics between time and space”, Gmunden aims to continue to live up to its already established reputation as a city of ceramics on a contemporary level. Here, projects between art and craft, theory and practice, inspiration and innovation come together. The result is a sustainable Austrian centre of excellence for ceramics that creates international relevance – from the Salzkammergut! With its wide range of offerings, Gmunden will become a centre for established and future ceramics experts as well as for ceramics enthusiasts and viewers from Austria and abroad. All of the planned initiatives are about awakening the interests of and involving the residents of the Salzkammergut as well as artists and guests from all over the world. A committed public commitment to the focus on ceramics in a historical and contemporary context.

The first of the three exhibitions presents a historical overview and the development of ceramic art from early modernism to the present day. This gives visitors an insight into the development of ceramic forms, from objects seemingly intended for everyday use to extraordinary vessels. The artists whose works are exhibited include modern masters such as Pablo Picasso and Fausto Melotti, innovative pioneers of ceramic media such as George E. Ohr, Lucie Rie and Miquel Barceló, as well as contemporary, emerging and established artists such as Masaomi Yasunaga, Lindsey Mendick, Edmund de Waal and Sterling Ruby.
