Easy hike around the Almsee with a short detour to the Ameisstein (776m)
Start and finish: Seehaus Almsee
8.7 km |  200 hm ascent and descent | 3 hours walking time
The route → alpenvereinaktiv.com
Equipment: Hiking equipment, sturdy shoes, clothing suitable for the weather and season.

Afterwards, storyteller Helmut Wittmann tells stories about the forest and legends from the Totes Gebirge in the woodpassage. → Am Zauberbaum

The woodpassage, a walk-in installation made of wood, can be seen from 12/09 to 03/11/24 not far from the car park at Seegasthof Almsee. The passage conveys the transformation from tree to house with simple pictogrammatic signs in 40 steps. The woodpassage project as part of the Capital of Culture 2024 is supported by the cooperation platform Forst Holz Papier and funded by the Austrian Waldfonds Forest Fund.

The Temporal Forest & Woodpassage

The focus is on the landscape, which has been heavily characterised by salt mining and industry in recent centuries.

Sound walks where you are invited to experience the region around the three lakes Grundlsee, Toplitzsee and Kammersee with different ears.

In their residency in Gößl, the artist duo friendly.organisms aka Till Bovermann and Katharina Hauke investigated both natural and technical sounds of the Salzkammergut with regard to the geological, biological and historical characteristics of the region.

They focus here on “drifts” – passive, subliminal forms of movement that take place on different temporal scales: from geological formation to contemporary transport.

Friendly.organisms invites you on the tours offered here to engage with the sound shifts they have investigated and imagined at various stations around the three lakes in the form of listening sessions and live performances.

Please bring rainwear in case of light rain, in case of heavy rain the event will be cancelled.

Thomas Grill and his team connect the places of the region by presenting the sounds of water in different forms, using various artistic strategies.

Bernadette La Hengst was, among other things, a singer and guitarist with the Hamburg band “Die Braut haut ins Auge” and works as a theatre director. From swinging pop songs to chansons and lovers’ soul, from funk and folk to rap and electro dub, she convincingly combines point of view and revolt. She does the rest with guitar, piano and a wonderfully powerful and passionate voice. In between, there are piano contrasts from Schubert to Bruckner to expressive contemporary art.

Vocalist, voice artist, yodeller or overtone singer? Everything may apply to
Christian Zehnder and yet the unconventional musician refuses to be categorised in his diversity. Between new alpine music, jazz and contemporary music, he has been successfully holding his own on international stages for some time now; there is always a hint of Swiss mountain air in his singing.

Where the real and the bizarre meet, “bizarre realism” comes into the world. This neologism was coined by Ebensee writer Walter Pilar, who died in 2018. He and many other contemporary artists show works of unconventional power in the historic Villa Pantschoulidzeff in Traunkirchen and on the terrain of the Karbach quarry on the inaccessible eastern shore of Lake Traunsee (district of Gmunden).

The tour starts at the Loidl landing stage (Ortsplatz, 4801 Traunkirchen), the villa can also be visited without a tour.

Opening hours

Villa Pantschoulidzeff

General opening hours of the exhibition:
Fri, Sat, Sun, 10 to 18:00

Villa Karbach-Tour

Boat trip to Karbach and guided tour of Villa Pantschoulidzeff:

(duration approx. 3.5 hours)
Meeting point landing stage Loidl / town square

Please note:

  • Sturdy footwear is essential! The tour includes a short hike through uneven, stony mining terrain. Not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
  • The tour is accompanied by a guide (mediation) and takes 3.5 to 4 hours
  • Cancellation of the event is possible in the event of bad weather, heavy rain or insufficient bookings (min. 10 people). An electronic notification will be sent by the evening of the previous day if necessary.

Landscapes like the Salzkammergut are not only living and natural spaces, they have a political history. In addition to active support for National Socialism, the tradition of resistance against the “authorities” was particularly expressed in the case of Hitler’s fascism. Areas of the alpine pastures and high mountains inaccessible to outsiders served as retreats and hiding places for those persecuted for political and religious reasons. Familiarity with the barrenness of the surroundings, with the harsh climatic conditions, but also the cohesion of the inhabitants in local collectives enabled the persecuted to survive. The objective of the walks in the Salzkammergut landscape is to anchor the memory of the women and men in the resistance in the collective memory.

Peatlands not only make an important contribution to the preservation of biodiversity, but also fulfil another function that should not be underestimated in the context of climate change: they are the most effective carbon reservoirs of all terrestrial habitats. However, moors can only fulfil this function if they have not been drained.

At the edge of the Kainischmoor, we visit an old peat cut that has been renaturalised. There it is possible to get an idea of the structure of a moor and understand how renaturalisation works. The excursion also offers an insight into an original moor landscape with rare species such as the sundew, a plant that feeds on insects, or the cranberry, which otherwise only grows in the tundra. The history of the moors in Ausseerland, from the Ice Age to the major mining projects for the salt works to the attempts at renaturalisation, is a history of land use. Moors are not a cultivated landscape and therefore man and nature face each other in a way that offers many opportunities to reflect on our approach to the latter.

About the excursion leader: Karin Hochegger, nature conservation expert and author, worked for many years as a nature conservation expert. She currently heads the Liezen district office of the Nature Conservation Association and works on renaturation projects for moors and wetlands in Ausseerland and Ennstal.

Future Stage Hinterberg

The “Future Stage Hinterberg” focuses on “New perspectives for rural regions beyond the mainstream” as the centrepiece of the E.I.K.E.-Forum – Woferlstall’s Capital of Culture activities. It searches for traces of future potential and innovative approaches in the region.
