About the project

Rangjung Yeshe Gomde is a center for Buddhist studies and meditation on the Bäckerberg in Scharnstein. The Buddhist center has existed since 2004 and is a refuge for an international audience. Together with the architecture departments of three universities – the University of Innsbruck, University of Kassel and UCL Bartlett School of Architecture – places of meditation and silence will be created on the grounds of the center.

The approximately 3-6 pavilions will be designed and implemented by the students as part of their courses. The result will be inspiring spaces that fit into the landscape of Baker Hill and invite people to find peace. The characteristics of the pavilions will also be coordinated in harmony with the location; primarily regional materials will be used. For the implementation, the students will cooperate with local partners (carpenters, etc.).

Starting in the fall of 2023, the students will work on the designs. During a visit to the Gomde Center in November 2023, they will get in touch with Buddhism and meditation. At the end of 2023/beginning of 2024, 3-6 designs will be selected (1-2 per university), which will finally be realized on site from spring 2024.
