The Altaussee salt mine has a long and moving history. Salt has been extracted here since 1147 and has served as an important basis for the lives of the people in the region for centuries. From 1943 to 1945, the mine served as a Nazi hiding place for stolen art and valuable artworks.
For this shared project of Salzwelten GmbH and the 2024 European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut, the multiple award-winning comic artist Simon Schwartz will engage in a graphic novel with the tumultuous history of the Altaussee salt mine from the Stone Age until the National Socialist era, the artworks stored in the mine as well as their recovery.
