Hidden in the rock. The mountain, the salt and the art

Comic Exhibition by Simon Schwartz

The Altaussee salt mine has a long and eventful history. Salt has been mined here since 1147 – for centuries an important source of livelihood for the people in the region. From 1943 to 1945, the mine was a Nazi hideout for looted art and valuable art objects.

About the project

In this joint project by Salzwelten GmbH and the Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 Capital of Culture, comic artist Simon Schwartz explores this eventful history of the Altaussee Salt Mountain. The multi-award-winning artist, who publishes his comics and illustrations in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung and Die Zeit, among others, approaches the eventful history of the Altaussee salt mine from the Stone Age to the Nazi era, as well as the art treasures stored in the mountain and their spectacular rescue, with this graphic novel. The result is a freely accessible exhibition in the Steinberghaus.
