The “Heimat-Welt” project, which has the motto “In search of lost times and new hopes”, began in January 2024, when young writers from Argentina, Austria, Senegal, Ukraine and Romania spent several months on a creative residency in the Salzkammergut. In their texts, they explored the concept of “home” in a direct and unbiased way, between the nostalgia of the past and the realities of the present. Romanian-born writer and playwright Thomas Perle also took part in the project.

Thomas Perle, winner of the renowned Austrian theatre prize “Nestroy”, was granted a residency in Timisoara last year by the German Cultural Forum Eastern Europe, where he was city writer for the Capital of Culture Year 2023. Perle is a close collaborator of the DSTT and last year worked with Clemens Bechtel on the text of the production “Sidy Thal” about the anti-Semitic attack on the theatre building in Timisoara in 1938.

A summer in the early eighties. Julia, known as Juli, the headmaster’s daughter, is back from boarding school and meets her first love Robert, the son of a scythe-working family, again at the village fair. He immediately realises that she is still wearing the ring he gave her. It is completely worn out, a cheap plastic thing from a chewing gum machine, full of hope for the future. He had given it to her on the last evening when she left for boarding school. Two years later, she still wears it.

The music theater project “Hammer” focuses on an upheaval in the history of the scythe industry. More about this project on salzkammergut-2024.at

“On the Way” tells the story of some fictional characters moving on the train. We hear their thoughts in constant layering and overlapping. We hear snippets of their biography, the reason for their journey, their everyday thoughts, their plans and disappointments, the changes in their lives and how they think about them.

unterwegs-salzkammergut-2024.at

The audio theatre lasts 41 minutes, just as long as the journey from Gmunden to Vorchdorf; the listeners follow it via app and headphones, partly accompanied by scenic elements in and outside the train. The characters of the listening theatre develop partly from research and conversations with the Vorchdorf amateur groups involved and with passengers of the Traunseetram; at the same time, excerpts and characters from literary texts are used.

The old woman has worked hard all her life, mostly unpaid and always unappreciated. Now the granddaughter, no longer quite young herself, thinks that grandma has earned a retirement where she can be looked after and pampered. But as is usual in our capitalist logic, she won’t do it herself, but will hire an Eastern European carer to do it for her. Why, she asks, is there a wage gap?

The shadows of the past come face to face with the young, silent Eastern European carer, who only raises her voice with her songs, which deal with the longing for freedom and self-determination. Christine Teichmann’s text puts her finger in the open wounds of our social and societal system and is based on research and interviews conducted in the Salzkammergut with those affected.

The poet, writer and radio play author Friederike Mayröcker lived for almost a century and made an impressive mark on German literature. She felt her environment with all her senses, moulded it into language and released it again in her very own way as “Proesie”. She described her flat as a “writing box”, where she formed an organism with her texts and words, and for one magical hour the Lehár Theatre was transformed into a Mayröcker’s place of words. A staircase, a socket, a wardrobe mirror will become a text-image-object with a quotation from her work, her signatures will be drawn in the dust of the past and the long invisible will become small works of art of the present.

“… we all felt = in the belly of the mountain = the breath of death. While the waning moon glided over the hills, back then in Bad Ischl.” (from: fleurs, 2016)

Men have names and faces, women are virtually absent. Conversations with local women shed light on the legacy young women are inheriting in the countryside. Together with them, we scrutinise the common image of women in smart dirndl dresses at various traditional festivals by delving into family stories. We ask how the political circumstances of history have affected the biographies of their ancestors. What happened in 1968, were there hippies in the Salzkammergut? What did tourism mean for women? Work, money, modest prosperity? What impact did democratisation, emancipation and revolt have on local women?  What roles do religion and politics play today? What forms of remembrance have emerged? How do we deal with painful or shameful memories?
The discussions will also revolve around questions of individual history: What has this female history done to me? How has it shaped me? All of this becomes visible in a performance in which the players lend their voices to women. Perhaps we need to rethink life in the countryside beyond all the clichés.

“Beloved Muse” is an exploration of art, fashion and the nature of love. The piece is a solo performance by Maxi Blaha, who takes on the role of Emilie Flöge, fashion designer and Klimt’s partner. The role was tailor-made for Blaha, tall, elegant and unapproachable, she could have stepped out of one of Klimt’s paintings.

His subsequent singles “Stone Cold” and “Lazy Suit” also made it onto international radios. His music, a fascinating mixture of soul, blues and pop, has thrilled fans worldwide. With influences from crossover legends such as Prince, Lenny Keavitz and Seal, Cesár creates timeless and profound songs. Cesár is currently working on the production of new songs and his album. In addition to his successful solo career, he also works as a producer and songwriter for other artists and projects.

CHRISTL [she/ they]
“Written like the Christ Child, spoken like the drug.”  (- FLUX FM, 2021)
The attempt to label CHRISTL will fail: CHRISTL is a transmedia artist who cannot be framed. Be it audiovisual, visual works or poetry – CHRISTL combines all of these into a perfect whole. CHRISTL are beyond borders, beyond gender & beyond medium: they combine experimental soundscapes and energetic, melancholic songs with their strong, sometimes fragile voice. CHRISTL is uncompromising, critical & confrontational.

Important notes:

  • Gina Brandlmayr, the head of the house, will prepare a set menu. Why not start your evening with a delicious dinner! During the show there is only drinks service. More details about the catering (such as price, start time) here shortly!
  • Please take your seat at least 15 minutes before the start of the event so that we can start on time.
  • A maximum of 5 tickets can be drawn per person. We want a high diversity of people at our events and to give many people the chance to be there.
  • If possible, please travel by public transport or carpool.
  • Stay the whole weekend and let yourself be enchanted by this picturesque region – the sea of Upper Austrians!
  • Be sure to visit all the other Capital of Culture events in the Salzkammergut. Event tips for the weekend 6.9-8.9. can be found here: www.salzkammergut-2024.at/veranstaltungen

Daily programme at ko-ko.org

At the centre of KOKO is the process-oriented examination of motives of community and joint action as well as the handling of nature, the environment and resources. KOKO develops a prototypical place of community creation and invites participation in the collaborative work process. Through dialogue and exchange between the local population and local, regional and international artists as well as visitors, a lively meeting place with a varied programme of interventions, exhibitions, performances, workshops and discussions is being created. For this applied research laboratory, a temporary, changeable work and action space will be created on the Laudach. The structure is intended to enable community-building practices strengthen social interaction and promote experimental approaches. The starting point for the collaborative process is the exploration of traditional artistic, cultural and craft practices from the Salzkammergut as well as stories and themes around the river space of the Laudach.

Art Your Village

This project deals with local identities, primarily within the smaller locations within the Salzkammergut region. International artists or artist groups engage with these locations and develop projects in the form of interventions over the course of the year.
