How can rural areas continue to develop in the future? How can traditions be preserved and still keep pace with modernity? How to build without destroying nature? How can we organise tourism efficiently without restricting our own lives? How to be networked with the world and still live regionally? How to remember the past and think about the future? How to use art to avoid marginalisation and show young people prospects?

These are the questions that the Bad Ischl Salzkammergut region focussed on in 2024. For the first time, it was not a city but an Alpine region that was the European Capital of Culture. The countryside, which is so often the poor relation of politics and business, was seen here as an artistic space of opportunity that opens up new ways of thinking about the past, the future and current social issues – exemplary for many other rural regions in Europe. “Impetus” is the title of the picture and text book on this diverse series of Capital of Culture projects.

Without his tireless work, only a few fragments about the resistance movement in the Salzkammergut would be known today. This publication is a reminder of these people.

This publication is a minor sensation. In 1978, Peter Kammerstätter, a contemporary history researcher from Linz, self-published what is probably the most important source to date on the subject of “Resistance in the Salzkammergut”.

Born in 1911, the historian – himself a concentration camp prisoner during the Nazi era – conducted extensive interviews with resistance fighters from Ausseerland and other places in the Salzkammergut region about their experiences during the dark years of National Socialism. Resi Pesendorfer and Marianne Feldhammer were among Kammerstätter’s interviewees, as were Maria Plieseis, Alois Straubinger and Karl Gitzoller. More or less all publications on the subject of “Resistance in the Salzkammergut” that have appeared in recent years and decades refer to Kammerstätter’s “collection of materials”.

Now, finally, for the European Capital of Culture year Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024, Kammerstätter’s pioneering publication is available in a beautiful, representative book edition.

One of the oldest forms of communication in the alpine world, the yodel, will sound out in a chorus of 1,000 voices to open the year in the Kurpark of the banner city of Bad Ischl with Hubert von Goisern. Doris Uhlich presents her powder dance. Conchita Wurst, Camo & Krooked and fanfare blowers from the 23 communities of the European Capital of Culture region are just some of the artists who will shape the opening event.

23 light people by the artist Isa Stein accompany the audience to the many places in the city where there will be celebrations: in churches, in the Alte Post, in Sudhaus, in the Lehár theater, in the Bad Ischl train station. Esther Balfe’s performance group heralds the start of the interventa Hallstatt 2024 building culture symposium. The art project SOLANGE #29 by Katharina Cibulka asks questions about equality. The spectacular animation Flood by Ruth Schnell and Martin Kusch (kondition pluriel) negotiates the Declaration of Human Rights.

Associations and musicians from the Salzkammergut region and abroad will make the opening night sound out loud and proud! Celebrate with us! With the Salzkammergut region, with Europe, with the world. We look forward to welcoming you.

Tartu 2024
On 26 January, Tartu2024 and Southern Estonia began their year as the European Capital of Culture. Following Bad Ischl Salzkammergut in Austria and preceding Bodø in Norway, the second largest city in Estonia ushered in the year full of 1000 events with a grand opening show “All Is One!”. An audience of thousands gathered in the heart of the university town on the banks of the river Emajõgi. The show, with a cast of over 100 actors, dancers and musicians centered on the importance of being with loved ones and building connections.

Bodo 2024
The opening ceremony of Bodø2024 in Norway on 3 February culminated in fireworks followed by applause from up to 20,000 people in Molobukta. In an almost windless Bodø Harbor, the audience was embraced by a magnificent mix of performing arts, sound and light. From the stage out at sea, a half-hour journey into the new year in the north began. The opening of the first European Capital of Culture in a city north of the Arctic Circle was a success.

We are living in times in which Europe has to find its position in the world anew and, in doing so, it is not only a matter of shared rules, guidelines and bureaucracy, but instead much more about the question of the role of culture as a source of power that provides identity.

Every municipality Capital of Culture. All together Capital of Culture.

With its four program lines, the European Capital of Culture provides inspiration for the specific encounter between citizens in Europe, strengthens the creative exchange between artists and supports international academic dialogue through shared projects. The 2024 European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut deals with questions of the local and global present and future. What roles does the region play in Europe? How does rural Alpine space develop? Globalization has challenged Europe’s understanding of itself.

Inner upheavals and the geopolitical shifts are calling upon us to rethink Europe’s place in the world. The 2024 European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut would like to make a contribution to positively shaping and living European culture in the future.

23 communities within the Salzkammergut region will network with each other and thus prove that working with each other while maintaining one’s own singularity is both a strength and signal that a Europe with selfaware regions is space for the future, just like rural space. With countless partner cities through Europe and beyond, with more than 200 art and culture projects and an additional 100 associated projects, we are giving culture the importance that it deserves with which a future can be built and a civil society can be made possible. The baton will be passed, so-to-speak, every 14 days during the year 2024, placing the respective focus on a specific community. Each community is the European Capital of Culture, together we are all the European Capital of Culture.

The 2024 European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut has provided some of the financing for the composition of a contemporary opera, which is based on an ancient legend about the discovery of the regional salt deposits by the merman of Grundlsee lake. The idea for the opera was developed by Dr. Verena Frey. The composer of the opera is Vanni Moretto, a renowned composer, musician and conductor who has received numerous international prizes and who has performed all around the world. His librettist is Stefano Pintor, a prize-winning author, director and “librettist in residence” of the Venice Biennial. The composer will conduct the opera himself, the director is Andreas Weirich, theatre manager and director at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. The main roles of the singers will be performed by young talents in co-operation with the Mozarteum University Salzburg.

Here, they develop a proposal for how we can encounter the contemporary world of today.

It is often presented as a pagan custom, but folklorists see it as an invention from the 19th century that grow out of an economic emergency: brown coal was used instead of wood to heat the salt pans in Saline Ebensee, with fatal consequences for everyone employed in the lumber industry – they were left without work and without an income. In order to avoid having to beg, they offered, amongst other things, a spectacle: the “Glöckeln” – a kind of ritualized begging.

Beginning in March, a show is dedicated to the ceramic artist KIM SIMONSSON. With his life-size “Moss People”, visitors to Gmundner Keramik will be able to immerse themselves in a fantastic world that is inspired by the Finnish homeland of the artist. Salon Schönberg and his music

Arnold Schönberg was closely connected with the Salzkammergut throughout his life and spent many summers at the Traunsee. In addition to personal tragedies in his relationship with Richard Gerstl, the burgeoning anti-Semitism at the beginning of the 1920s will also be a topic. Music by Arnold Schönberg and his time will be heard in a chamber concert and experiences from this period will be presented in a reading.

Salon Wittgenstein and music

The Wittgensteins were talented in many ways and brother Paul started his career as a pianist. The outbreak of war in 1914 brought this to an abrupt halt, but even more frustrating was the amputation of his right arm due to an injury. Back in Vienna, he resumed his career despite the limitation and focused on works for the left hand. His own playing technique brought him back to the top. He commissioned the most renowned composers of his time to write new pieces for him, two of which will be heard on 16.6.2024 and Herman Beil will present the life of Paul Wittgenstein and his family.

How can women and their actions or their positive impact on the city be made more visible? Last year, a commission of historians dealt with this question and made recommendations for the naming of streets and squares. This research focused on women who had their centre of life in Bad Ischl and who were victims of the National Socialist terror regime or were in the resistance because of various aspects. One of these women was Theresia Pesendorfer: The ceremony for the project will take place on Europe Day, at the square named after her near the music pavilion in Bad Ischl’s Kurpark.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the salons were a social meeting place for merchants, intellectuals, artists, etc., which offered the opportunity to discuss the topics of the day in a private, bourgeois setting in the summer resort of the Salzkammergut. In the salons, women in particular, the salonniere, had their political role: they were the only stage for women to actively and creatively participate in political, intellectual and artistic life. The private setting also facilitated free exchange and encounters between different classes. This cultural wealth was directly suppressed by the wars: salons in the sense of large literary, artistic or political circles became rare and almost completely disappeared after the Second World War.

Transience – The eternal struggle for recognition

Music in exile – Bösendorfer Artist Pavel Kachnov

28/10/22, 19.00, post office building Bad Ischl
Bösendorfer ar`st Pavel Kachnov, born in Kiev, Ukraine, deals intensively with the events of today. He endeavours to bring works by many creative, contemporary and unknown composers to the stage with the background of the forced abandonment of their homeland, be it for existential or political reasons. On the one hand, the programme deals with Ukrainian and displaced or emigrated composers.

When music becomes home…

27/10/23, 19.00, post office building Bad Ischl
Survival and downfall, love and betrayal, winners and losers: in times of oppression and
oppression and persecution, many musicians leave their homeland and never return.
never return. Their fight for life and recognition is also a fight for their music. It is
the only thing they have left. It becomes their home, each in their own way.
Johannes Fleischmann, Justus Zeyen and Benno Ure use music and lyrics to transport us back to the
the first half of the twentieth century, in times of exile.

With A Woman Who Knows What She Wants, the Jewish-Austrian composer Oscar Straus, one of the most successful composers of operettas in the 1920s and 1930s, created a masterpiece that embodied the operetta style of the Weimar Republic and, with hits like “Why shouldn’t a woman have an affair” and “Every woman has some desire”, threw the dominant stereotypes overbroad in a fresh and cheeky way.

The Jewish-Austrian composer Oscar Straus had his Woman Who Knows What She Wants! sing “Why shouldn’t a woman have an affair” and with that, did not only compose a masterpiece that embodies the operetta style of the Weimar Republic, but also reflected the new image of women from that time – lascivious, fresh and bold. As one of the most successful composers of operettas in the 1920s and 1930s, he created, together with the librettist Alfred Grünwald, a touching piece that still, 100 years later, is a moving celebration of life and love – a brilliant guest performance by the Komische Oper Berlin that throws away all kinds of clichés about roles, fusillade of marches, waltzes, foxtrots and chansons from the pen of Oscar Straus.

The composer, painter and writer Arnold Schönberg spent his summer holidays at Lake Traunsee six times between 1905 and 1923. For some summers he stayed at the Gasthof Hois’n. At the Traunsee Schönberg created chamber music, songs, piano pieces, paintings and drawings. The first twelve-tone composition in the history of music was written in Traunkirchen in July 1921.

The exhibition traces Schönberg’s creative years at Lake Traunsee, sketches a panorama of significant modernist artistic encounters and, away from the idyll, addresses the summer resort anti-Semitism of the early 1920s in the Salzkammergut.

Bruckners Salt https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/en/projekte/bruckners-salt/ Fri, 01 Sep 2023 08:21:30 +0000 https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/?post_type=project&p=430286327 A saltworks is a place for extracting salt, isn't it? It is also a very special place to get a taste for the crystalline basic structures of Bruckner's music.

In the spaciousness of a production hall of the Ebensee salt works, a large number of choirs from Upper Austria, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and Markus Poschner will gather on this special evening for a unique Bruckner event in a class of its own. The audience will experience motets, symphonic pieces, improvisations and the unexpected in a unique space. The audience will experience motets, symphonic sections, improvised and unexpected works by Anton Bruckner in an unmistakable location – the most spectacular sound space in the Salzkammergut, where art and traditional industry merge into culture.

“This symphony is the creation of a giant …”, wrote Hugo Wolf after the premiere of Bruckner’s symphony in 1892. Today, the Scherzo, Adagio and Finale become the starting point for a symphonic landscape with islands of motets. Bruckner the church musician meets Bruckner the world symphonist, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz meets local choirs, the Capital of Culture and the KulturEXPO join forces. Today, Bruckner’s “And” is experiencing a unique realisation in an extraordinary location. We are creating a resounding “we” that has never existed before in this form. For Bruckner, the pub and the church are synonymous places that find expression in polka and chorale. The Ansfeldner master does not differentiate, he brings us together, brings us together. Art cannot save the world, but without it we are lost. Music happens in resonance, needs the you and the I who sings, plays and listens. Thank you for being here!

Tours by Willy-Fred https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/en/projekte/tours-by-willy-fred/ Wed, 31 May 2023 12:24:49 +0000 https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/?post_type=project&p=430258392 The bicycle as an indispensable means of transport in the resistance against National Socialism: This project describes bicycle routes used by the partisan group Willy-Fred.

In May 1945, Austria experienced liberation from the Nazi regime of terror. Women and men made a significant contribution to this with their respective resistance activities. They were active underground as lone fighters and/or in resistance groups. The bicycle appears in many narratives as an indispensable mobility vehicle: from a helpful means of transport for secretly carrying news, medicine and food, to necessary rescue journeys, and finally to bicycle journeys to freedom after a successful escape.

This project describes bicycle routes in the resistance against National Socialism in the Salzkammergut, most of which were ridden in connection with the partisan group Willy-Fred. The stories, individual fates and bicycle routes leading across the Salzkammergut researched for this purpose are merged into a total of five packages in the form of text, images and geodata on the digital platform Salzkammergut Culture Guide and thus made available to a broad public. These packages/data collections extend geographically over almost the entire Salzkammergut 2024 region. Using the associated Salzkammergut Culture Guide-APP, routes can be recreated or cycled in order to understand the hardships that individual cyclists – and very often women – had to endure when they had to cover more than 100 kilometres a day on their bikes, sometimes with great hardship.

The newly created cultural tourism offer is aimed at school classes, historians, cyclists and the population in general and will be presented to an interested public in the context of a discussion event. Accompanied tours make it possible to get to know the region from a new perspective and at the same time teach how to use new digital tools and access history by bicycle.
