As a city dweller, I cultivate an urban fanaticism that no rural experience has been able to break. The city is breath, awakening, freedom, civilisation. Not the countryside. At least for me. That is the ideological starting point. Nevertheless, I would like to use my stay in Ebensee to convince myself of the opposite. To understand why you live in a place – not just for the summer – that is known for having only old people, for dying. Why do you live here? What keeps you here? What is it? Why don’t you move from a dead place, as is the trend?

a Before – Between – After
In the Before I will explain my point of view, why I cultivate my urban fanaticism, my short manifesto of reservations. In the “in-between” I want to record my “explorations” on site, with conversations with the locals, and answer the main question: why do they live here? What keeps them in this place?

In the “afterwards” I want to take stock of a) the extent to which my attitude has changed b) the extent to which I have changed. Could this Ebensee, which has a few endearing points for me due to its defence history, even convert me into a country girl?

If there is a possibility, I would probably try to accompany my “in-between” photographically with small Polaroid photos. Things that catch my eye and self-indulgent selfies that document my decline in the provincial air – or, on the contrary, my awakening and rebirth as a rural cheerful creature.

What happens when a self-confessed, even fanatical city dweller undertakes a self-experiment in the Austrian provinces? Certainly not a chapter from the many “How I found my true life in the country” chronicles!

Solmaz Khorsand is a journalist, author and podcaster. She has worked for the newspaper Zeit, derstandard.at, the Wiener Zeitung and the magazine Republik, among others. Her book “Pathos” was published in 2021 and her current book “untertan. Von braven und rebellischen Lemmingen”. She also took part in the Artist in Residence programme of the Salzkammergut Capital of Culture.

The “Heimat-Welt” project, which has the motto “In search of lost times and new hopes”, began in January 2024, when young writers from Argentina, Austria, Senegal, Ukraine and Romania spent several months on a creative residency in the Salzkammergut. In their texts, they explored the concept of “home” in a direct and unbiased way, between the nostalgia of the past and the realities of the present. Romanian-born writer and playwright Thomas Perle also took part in the project.

Thomas Perle, winner of the renowned Austrian theatre prize “Nestroy”, was granted a residency in Timisoara last year by the German Cultural Forum Eastern Europe, where he was city writer for the Capital of Culture Year 2023. Perle is a close collaborator of the DSTT and last year worked with Clemens Bechtel on the text of the production “Sidy Thal” about the anti-Semitic attack on the theatre building in Timisoara in 1938.

The second part of the NEW SALT event series, which is being implemented as part of Bad Ischl Salzkammergut European Capital of Culture 2024, will bring experimental and punk sounds and pop interventions to the Kitzmantelfabrik in Vorchdorf on 18 November 2023 from 8:30 pm.

Choreographer, drummer and singer Stina Force will open the evening loudly with her one-woman punk band with humour and relentlessness. Robert Pockfuß and Manu Mayr – known as part of the band 5KHD – will present their duo schtum with skilful interference and feedback using bass and guitar, before FARCE performs their sophisticated pop gems. To round things off, Gischt will deliver one of their rare, eclectic DJ sets.

21.00 Stina Force concert/performance
22.00 schtum concert
23.00 FARCE Live AV-Performance
23.50 Gischt DJ set

PROGRAMMDETAILS

FARCE (DE) is just as much at home in the feminist underground as in the international avant-garde. FARCE aka Veronika König, who is reminiscent of bands like Robyn, LCD Soundsystem and St. Vincent, produces an intoxicating mix of catchy and experimental ideas that find a home in theatrical and extravagant pop music. Their latest album “not to regress” features none other than Soap & Skin. After appearances at the renowned Sziget and Primavera Sound festivals, FARCE can now be experienced live at NEW SALT.
farce.cool

schtum (AT) The music of schtum evokes the feeling of abstract movement in sound. The duo plays live on instruments amplified by distortion and reverb, transforming microtonal interference and feedback into dark, often brutal electronic sequences. The dynamic contrast between unadulterated expression and clinical precision is the driving force in their music.

Stina Force (SE) is a choreographer, performance artist and one-woman punk band that must be experienced live. Her live performance is relentless and no two performances are the same, everything is created in the moment. With improvised vocal experiments, grotesque monologues and hammering drumbeats, she first pushes her audience powerfully against the wall, then it eats out of her hand. Stina Force skilfully plays with stable and unstable states, her performances are full of tension, humour and nerve-wracking energy. Stina Force recently gave a rousing performance at the Vienna Festival.

Gischt (AT) presents one of their rare and eclectic, as well as brutal DJ sets at the end of the evening.

To kick off the event series, NEW SALT brings sprawling and unusual musical positions to Ebensee. Two very different venues will be played: the established and internationally renowned Ebensee cinema and the charming, industrially appealing Alte Weberei.

The drummer Katharina Ernst will open NEW SALT Ebensee with a solo concert in the Alte Weberei. Super Nase & Co will then challenge our perception in a performative way, Séverine Ballon will play one of her multi-layered cello concerts and Dorian Concept will show how much virtuosity and lightness there is in the keyboard.
At Kino Ebensee, Anika presents her solo project reminiscent of Velvet Underground or Mazzy Star, exceptional drummer Lukas König plays a duo with turntablist Mariam Rezaei, while BR-Laser transforms the space with sophisticated laser projections. Melt Downer, the noiserock trio around Wolfi Möstl, draw the brute conclusion of the evening.

This means working together, but also eating, discussing, tasting and getting a taste of farm production. The aim is to get a realistic picture of life and work on a farm, between romanticisation and existential threat, through this practical experience.

The post A day at the farm appeared first on Salzkammergut 2024.

About the farm: 12 mother cows and their calves, two pigs for subsistence, a few chickens, meadows, fruit crops and forest. Her ancestors have run the Bergsimon farm for centuries. Originally, the trained carpenter did not want to take over her parents’ inheritance, but in the meantime she is a farmer with heart and soul.

Themes that (among other things) are worked on together:

  • Representation of small farmers’ interests
  • Species-appropriate cattle feeding: The importance of meadows for biodiversity, the landscape and animal-friendly feeding in contrast to concentrated feed.
  • The genius of native fruit trees: they yield a lot with little effort. Starting with the cherries in spring, the Bergsimon farm had its own fruit all year round. Christine and her family are working to ensure self-sufficiency again throughout the year.
  • Importance of small farms for the region, society and food sovereignty in general

Schedule (10:00 – 16:00):

  • Introductions – who is all here
  • Farm presentation incl. tour of the farm
  • preparing dough together for farmer’s doughnuts, delivering potato or pumpkin soup
  • Preparing must/juice pressing – collecting fruit together, setting up machine
  • Lunch – farmer’s doughnuts and soup
  • juice pressing (with hydraulic juice press) incl. direct tasting

Max. number of participants: 10 – 12 persons
Participation only after registration by email to: veranstaltung@viacampesina.at
Please bring weatherproof (work) clothing and shoes! A photographer will be on site to document the day. By taking part, you automatically agree to be photographed.

A summer in the early eighties. Julia, known as Juli, the headmaster’s daughter, is back from boarding school and meets her first love Robert, the son of a scythe-working family, again at the village fair. He immediately realises that she is still wearing the ring he gave her. It is completely worn out, a cheap plastic thing from a chewing gum machine, full of hope for the future. He had given it to her on the last evening when she left for boarding school. Two years later, she still wears it.

The music theater project “Hammer” focuses on an upheaval in the history of the scythe industry. More about this project on salzkammergut-2024.at

This beer is a bridge for intercultural dialogue.

Brewed within the borders of the Salzkammergut, Åndas combines the essence of the region with global nuances. This beer not only quenches thirst, but also promotes understanding, celebrates global diversity and redefines our notions of familiar and foreign. The recipe primarily uses grains and plants from the region, but also dares to think outside the box and includes ingredients from the African continent. These components are more than mere ingredients; they embody narratives from different regions and combine global stories with local traditions.

13/03/24 – Presentation of the beer at the Schloss Eggenberg private brewery

Åndas’ advertising campaign takes a nuanced approach that reflects the beer’s dual identity – rooted in tradition yet global. The posters show people of African descent embodying different global cultures. “ÅNDAS” is more than a beer concept; it is a visual and sensory statement about the beauty and importance of diversity, which is reflected in its unique taste that combines local heritage with global flavours.

The picturesque landscape, the gradually increasing importance of tourism in the 19th century and the presence of the imperial family all led to an unusual concentration of photographers in the Salzkammergut. They left behind a considerable number of historical photographs and archives. The Time Travelproject shines the spotlight on the little-known historical photographers of the region.

Everyday scenes, portraits and landscape photographs by Styrian photographers Albert Rastl, Michael Moser, Erich Bahrendt, Konrad Mautner and others are made available to international photo artists: Zuzana Pustaiova (SVK), Yukimi Akiba (JP), Kim Boske (NL), Zhang Kechun (CHN), Marco Lanza (IT), Elisabeth Czihak (A), Tamas Dezso (HUN), Pawel Jaszczuk (POL), Patrick Lambertz (DE-CH), Stefanie Mooshammer (A) and Yvonne Oswald (A). They comment on and interpret the historical views, in this way linking them up to contemporary photographic art.

The exhibition will display both the historical and newly created works.

The two artists MelaMoi and BernhardPe have made it their artistic practice to devote themselves entirely to spaces. Nothing new is added, nothing existing is removed. The focus is on dealing with what already exists. The greatest power lies in the creative moment. We shape ourselves, our relationships, the realities of our lives and thus also the spaces that continually characterise us. Far too few areas allow us to place design at the centre of our attention. In art, this is a given. For 48 hours, both work their way through the space. In this case, the garden of the former Carmelite convent. Whereby the garden is actually meant here and any interior spaces are left out. The garden consists of organic and inorganic materials. Interrelationships become apparent. Here, hierarchies behave differently than in enclosed spaces where art is brought to bear. In the garden, nature provides the possibilities, and it is the garden – thus the purpose to which the space is dedicated – that brings the other materials into the field. We work with natural materials, but also with everything else that is used in the monastery garden. Alienation and refinement. Shaping and liberating from familiar forms. Exploring the potential of spaces. Daring to create new narratives. Working out of the space describes the artistic approach of MelaMoi and BernhardPe quite well.

AVANTGARD/EN

AVANTGARD/EN is an extended artist-in-residence programme at the Carmelite Convent in Gmunden and contributes to making the garden a place of public dialogue, encounter, reflection and cultural exchange that brings together people from different backgrounds and perspectives to negotiate the present.

Under the title “Und weiter so – Alle Alle! Culture”, the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 and the Bruckner Year will celebrate the end of the cultural year on 30 November. HOT BOX BUILDING will also be taking part and celebrating its last performance.

The HOT BOX BUILDING has made four stops during the Capital of Culture year. Now it’s time for the last time: the mobile wooden construction, where the traditional Japanese omakase concept meets state-of-the-art sausage stand architecture, will be cooked up one last time!

Now, in a culinary modified formation, various chefs from the region will come together alongside host Philip Rachinger. One chef will take on each of the five bookable slots and create a menu just for the day and occasion!

As part of the Healthy Boy Band and thus co-founder of HOT BOX BUILDING, Philip Rachinger will serve a culinary greeting to the Capital of Culture regions 2025 in addition to his own slot as host of the hosts for each menu.

In order to connect the flavours of the Capital of Culture cities at this last event, to connect the regions with each other! True to the title of the event: We are all culture!

The HOT BOX BUILDING is the result of a cooperation between the trio of the Healthy Boy Band (Philip Rachinger, Lukas Mraz and Felix Schellhorn), the agency friendship.is and Studio Clemens Bauder as part of the Wirtshauslabor Salzkammergut 2024, a project of the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024. The mobile wooden construction was realised by the Scharnstein joinery TREWIT.

Wirtshauslabor Salzkammergut 2024

Wirtshauskultur reloaded: The laboratory offers top-class chefs, ambitious trainees and artists a playing field to dynamise traditional regional gastronomy with new culinary art and innovative concepts.

Salzkammerqueer

In order to facilitate the exchange of experiences among like-minded people and those looking for support in rural areas, the women’s centres are helping to establish a queer community in the Salzkammergut with this project. The aim is to initially provide a home base and infrastructure for an active community that will exist beyond the duration of the project. The second goal is an experimental short film series and artistic photo positions that communicate queer life in the Salzkammergut via social media.

Peter and the Wolf One of the most frequently performed classical works in the world, Sergei Prokofiev’s musical fairy tale tells the story of Peter, who lives with his grandfather in rural Russia. One day, when Peter forgets to close the garden gate, a wolf from the nearby forest seizes his chance and comes dangerously close to Peter’s house and his animals…

  • 20 h Opening by Tom Neuwirth and the Capital of Culture team
Tom Neuwirth has toured the world as Conchita and has inspired thousands. He has returned to support and accompany the Capital of Culture as a member of the committee, and his words will span an arc from the opening in January to the final departure of the Capital of Culture
  • 20:15 – 21 h Counter and Strings. Alois Mühlbacher and the String Quartet. (concert)
The self-definition of the 4 gentlemen from Linz is already a real eye-opener: JazzRockClassicalCrossover String Quartet. And then there is the great countertenor Alois Mühlbacher. A sonic experience and an exciting encounter from Queen to Vivaldi.
  • 21 – 21:45 Timpani, triangle and tam-tam. The incredible world of Vivi Vassileva. (percussion)
The young percussionist Vivi Vassileva regularly sets off from her home in Ebensee to wow audiences in concert halls around the world.  Together with guitarist Lucas Campara Diniz, she has created a multi-sound spectacle for the Capital of Culture that puts composers such as Iannis Xenakis in a new, fresh light.
  • 22 – 23 h HipHop meets Pop, Indie joins Rap. Sharktank (concert)
Hip hop meets pop, indie joins rap: Katrin, Mile and Marco not only overcome and combine genres in their interplay – as Sharktank, they open up “a niche on the German-speaking music market that we didn’t know existed until now” (DIFFUS); where playful feel-good beats and light-hearted instrumentals meet conscious rap and melodic vocals, the Viennese trio has found its colourful, independent sound – jump in & swim along!

From pop, hosting, TV to make-up, she is at home wherever dialect & diversity is allowed to reign & people want to forget the outside world for an hour.

Bar on the 1st floor

  • 20 – 23 h korli (DJ set)
Growing up in the 90s – the decade of CDs – Klara aka korli’s love of music began with her parents’ CD collection. Instead of vinyl stores, LIBROs were bought empty and, in the absence of alternatives, 30-second snippets were downloaded from the first music sites on the Internet. The CDs have disappeared, the love of music and the data size of the downloaded music have grown. Their sets build a bridge from R’n’B to hip hop to house and electronic bass music, and sometimes a tribute to the decade of CDs awaits at the end of this bridge.
  • 23 h – end DJ Rich Parents (DJ set, Salzkammerqueer hosted by Aufbruch, Salzkammergut!)
Salzkammerqueer hosted by Aufbruch, Salzkammergut! DJ Rich Parents plays pop to hyperpop but mainly goes off, brings not only queer bangers but the whole party. DJ RP’s best friends are Kylie and Kim, which sums it up, so treat them like a slut and you won’t get them out of your head.

Kinosaal 1. Floor

  • 20 h – midnight Let’s go, Salzkammergut! Model region for rural Europe
Documentation European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024, Chris Gütl

Former drugstore in the city centre, Rathausplatz 6

  • From 17 h JUKEBOX with ABSINTH BAR by God’s Entertainment (Analogue Juke Box)
K20, J14, U07, A11 are the abbreviations used on menus in popular restaurants. They allow us to communicate with each other and, in the best case, get served what we want. JUKEBOX works on the same principle, which nowadays can only be found on eBay or Willhaben under rarities and golden prices. JUKE BOX by God’s Entertainment will open our eyes, mouths and ears again and at the same time make everyone emotionally satisfied. Our JUKE BOX is analogue, mechanical, speaks, takes 2 EURO, winks and has every song in stock that has somehow been documented in the last official 6000 years of human history. From Katy Perry to Vangelis. Forward into the past!
ABSINTH BAR – RESEARCH SPACES FOR PSYCHOACTIVIST STATES
What does it mean to be in a normal state? Mere conditioning to the familiar or being in line with syllogistic logic? If you are in the four-sided stands of a football stadium, for example, you wait spellbound for the slow motion replay of the goal or a disputed offside position. Standing at the checkout of a supermarket, do you immediately rule out the possibility that the overworked cashier is a German? After a moment’s thought, however, you quickly realise that the search for a logical conclusion seems illogical after all. Absinth Bar offers nothing that we are used to, it stands outside of any logic and learned sensuality. It refuses to keep its usual opening hours and does not adhere to any other conventional agreements. The meaningfulness of intoxication, the essence of the evening and the truthfulness of the psychoactive state are on the menu at HEURE VERTE.

Stadtpfarrkirche, Kirchenplatz 5

  • 20:30 – 21:30 h Instrumental Art Pop by Anna Lang and Alois Eberl
Sinfonia De Carnaval – that’s Anna Lang and Alois Eberl on cello, trombone, accordion, percussion, electronics and voices. Instrumental art pop that knows no boundaries: elements of jazz and pop meet electronic sound universes and the full sound spectrum of classical playing techniques. Violoncello, voice, trombone, percussion and accordion in a unique and newly defined sound!

Evangelische Kirche, Georgstraße 9

  • 19:30 – 21 h Magdalena Hasibeder, organ I Georg Hasibeder, vibraphone I Jonathan Six, marimba: The Beauty and the Beat. Fireworks with organ and percussion.
The Hasibeder siblings have made different careers from Linz. Organist Magdalena Hasibeder continues to enliven the local music scene with surprising encounters. Here she fuses the enchanting organ of the Evangelical Church with the large instruments of percussionists Jonathan Six and Georg Hasibeder  a truly fraternal firework display.

Bürgerspitalkirche, Kößlmühlgasse 1

  • 21 – 24 h Holy Hydra with AVBRUCH
AVBRUCH is an audio-visual installation that renegotiates the theme of new beginnings in an intense live performance. Here, past and future meet, traditions are broken, a dialogue of extremes unfolds: light meets dark, loud meets quiet, sacred meets profane, yin meets yang. The hospital church becomes an interface, a control centre between the worlds – a place where boundaries become blurred. Holy Bim Bam. Bum.
Ford Escort & Jens Vetter (Sound Artists), Robert Huemer & Tim Niedermeier (Visual Artists), Amanda Augustin & Lorena Höllrigl – Hydra Kulturverein (Artistic Concept)

Stadtplatz Schiffsanlegestelle, Schiffsangelesteg am Rathausplatz

  • 19 – 21 h Plateau Blo meets Urban Sauna Club meets Kombucha by Studio Clemens Bauder, DJ Sets by raumarbeiterinnen & friends
At the end of the European Capital of Culture project Plateau Blo, the floating sauna on Lake Traun by the artists’ collective raumarbeiterinnen and in collaboration with the University of Art and Design Linz, we’re turning up the heat once again. Also taking part is the Kombucha Bar by Studio Clemens Bauder, architect and graduate of the University of Art, as well as the residence guests, Martin and Flora Szurcsik-Nimmervoll, who will translate the sauna to Rathausplatz with a wolf as an expansive construction and intervention. DJ sets by raumarbeiterinnen & friends embed the installation by the lake in nocturnal sounds. “The right dance outfit for the evening is an eye-catching bathrobe over a winter jacket.”

Café Brandl, Rathausplatz 1

  • From 21:15 h DJ sets by Drumfabrik (DJs: Asense, Cerf, Critical Contents, Dvnc, Nikasun, Rawtid, Voltare, Zappla)
With the mission to promote the electronic music scene in Upper Austria, the Drumfabrik cultural association was founded by Zappla in Vorchdorf around 7 years ago. Dozens of events with international stars of the scene later, the girls and boys are paying another visit to the town of Gmunden and are looking forward to a night of dancing, passion and of course: drum & bass!

Bar Zum blauen Affen, Kirchengasse 8

  • 20:30 – 24 h Literaturrausch hosted by Wirtshauslabor – readings and spoken word performances
An empty cultural venue becomes a wild literary salon for one evening. Under the name “Literaturrausch”, the successful Capital of Culture project Wirtshauslabor is making its final appearance for 2024. Curated by Magdalena Stammler and Christina Jaritsch, the following authors will be taking to the stage: Lydia Haider, Mercedes Kornberger, Jacinta Nandi, Jörg Piringer and Magdalena Stammler.

Inter*Story – A Piece of Activism
AT, 2022, 43 min., German (without subtitles)
Film production: Djordje Čenić, Nicole Baïer
With: Luan Pertl, Magdalena Klein, Noah Rieser, Tinou Ponzer, Tobias Humer

“In the mainstream, inter* people are usually portrayed in a distorted and voyeuristic way. But what are their own stories that they want to share? Why have the performers become activists and vice versa? Why do they fight for human rights, visibility and the removal of taboos for people with variations in gender characteristics? What are the untold stories? In the setting of a TV talk show, the intersex performers share their own stories and experiences, sometimes crass, sometimes sad, sometimes funny or even absurd.”
The four sold-out performances were filmed and turned into a film. What does the cinematic translation of this evening of theatre look like? Where does this look at the topics of the intersex performers take us?

After the film we invite you to a film talk with Magdalena Klein and Tinou Ponzer!

It was once called “white gold”: salt is a crucial element for the entire Salzkammergut region; even today it remains an important trade good, which leads some to prosperity and a few to richness.

Water and wood are both critical factors; without them, the extraction of salt would not be possible. – Salt and water are also both of critical importance for our bodies. Our organism is to 65 % made up of water and requires a daily ration of at least five grams of salt. – After all: salt and water are actually adversaries, which mutually devour each other and dissolve each other and are cursed to exist symbiotically until they are perhaps separated once again in a brew house.

“sudhaus – art with salt and water” is the central art exhibition of the European Capital of Culture. With the international and interregional participation of renowned artists, a spectrum of topics that is as broad as possible will be presented, which is introduced by documents from the history of the region. With a wide variety of facets and points of entry, the topics of salt and water will be presented in the form of objects, sculptures, installations, films, photography and sound works.

A part of the exhibit will make reference to the conference Open Water Dialogues, which concerns itself with urgent problems such as disappearing glaciers and the increasing scarcity of water around the world.
