Following the great success in 2022 & 2023, some of the most exciting local artists from the worlds of classical and folk music will once again come together this year for the Christmas concert inspired by Franz Welser-Möst as part of Hausmusik Roas. Folk music and classical music – performed at the highest musical level – merge into a touching whole. Through sensitive interplay and authentic music-making, the artists want to focus on the unifying and touching aspects of art and create a festive atmosphere with the desire to bring music to where it belongs: to the people, directly from heart to heart.

In the dreamlike ambience of the parish church of St. Nikolaus Bad Ischl, these subtle musicians will succeed in doing just that.

This concert will once again be recorded live in front of an audience and broadcast as an ORF III Christmas Day concert in the “Erlebnis Bühne” series on 25 December 2024.

Daily programme at ko-ko.org

At the centre of KOKO is the process-oriented examination of motives of community and joint action as well as the handling of nature, the environment and resources. KOKO develops a prototypical place of community creation and invites participation in the collaborative work process. Through dialogue and exchange between the local population and local, regional and international artists as well as visitors, a lively meeting place with a varied programme of interventions, exhibitions, performances, workshops and discussions is being created. For this applied research laboratory, a temporary, changeable work and action space will be created on the Laudach. The structure is intended to enable community-building practices strengthen social interaction and promote experimental approaches. The starting point for the collaborative process is the exploration of traditional artistic, cultural and craft practices from the Salzkammergut as well as stories and themes around the river space of the Laudach.

Art Your Village

This project deals with local identities, primarily within the smaller locations within the Salzkammergut region. International artists or artist groups engage with these locations and develop projects in the form of interventions over the course of the year.

The Glöcklerlauf always takes place on January 5th in the center of Vorchdorf. The Glöckler have been running in Vorchdorf since 1950. The Glöcklerlauf is one of the most impressive winter customs. On the last Rauhnacht of the Christmas festival on January 5th, the white-clad Glöckler with their magnificent caps and bells run in after the prayer bell at 6 p.m. from all access roads on the Schlossplatz in Vorchdorf. With their noise they want to drive away the bad spirits, wake up the good ones and remind the grain of its duty. The light in the caps indicates that winter has been overcome. It is said to conquer darkness and cold and to ask for happiness and fertility. According to an old custom, the figures are run counter-clockwise.

Parade of the Gloeckler

By ringing bells, the “Gloeckler” drive out evil spirits from the valleys, woodlands and their homes, and it is said that the more men who take part in this procession, the more good fortune the neighbourhood can look forward to in the forthcoming year.

The processions take place in the evening of January 5; white figures with ringing bellbelts and splendid colourful light caps on their heads pass numerous onlookers.

08:00 p.m. arrival of all groups at the marketplace of Bad Goisern at Lake Hallstatt.

The Gloeckler cap

The Gloeckler cap consists of a frame made from narrow strips of wood. These are covered with black paper.

In the past, “Gloeckler” used cardboard instead of paper as examples of decorative head wear, used in 1906, have shown. Patterns and interesting shapes are cut or punched out from this and bright coloured paper is stuck on from the inside. The edges are also decorated, mostly with fringes made from white tissue paper.

Candles inside the frames light up the head decorations, adding to their charm. In order that the “Gloeckler” do not have to go around in the dark, each group has its own “candle lighter”. At the head of each procession is a man without head decoration. Instead, he carries a stick which he waves to clear the way for the procession of bell ringers.

In former times, each man carried his own stick. Nowadays the head decorations are much larger, and both hands are often needed to support them. The leader also carries a bell around his waist which is much bigger than those carried by the other “Gloeckler”. This is used to stop the procession, to call upon the men to bow or to bend their knees.

It marks the night into Epiphany, or Twelfth Night . The name "Glöckler" derives from the word “knock” and is rooted in an old Salzkammergut tradition.

The post Glöckler Parade appeared first on Salzkammergut 2024.

]]>
The “Glöckler”, in groups of up to 20,are led from house to house knocking on the doors and asking for a gift.

They are dressed in white, have a belt with a loud sounding bell and carry ornate headresses (called Caps) lit with candles .

The caps are intricately designed .The first cap always depicts the comet, then follow caps with ornaments, buildings and references to customs and events. The Glöcker form a line and move in the figure of 8 and a circle, symbolising infinite repetition and the eternal cycle of nature. The candles and bells are to drive away evil spirits and bring blessings on humans and animals.

In Bad Ischl there are normally around 20 Glöcker groups and around 10 groups come into the town centre.

A diverse schedule of ancillary programming and a parade by the mining associations on Sunday through Bad Ischl provide an invitation to join the celebrations.

Ebensee is the heart and the origin of this custom, leading it to win UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2010. The idea behind the Glöcklerlauf is to attract the blessings of good spirits and drive away evil ones. The Glöcklerpassen (teams taking part in the procession) meet between 6 and 7 p.m. in the centre of town and then make their way through Ebensee’s districts. The Glöckler wear headgear weighing up to 20 kg, plus large bells attached to leather belts. At 6 p.m. on the dot, a gun salute announces the start of the parade, which takes place whatever the weather. Those interested in how these artworks are made can visit the large Town Hall chamber on 5 January from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to see the headwear of some of the participants. Museum.Ebensee offers a permanent Glöckler headwear exhibition during opening hours.
