This means working together, but also eating, discussing, tasting and getting a taste of farm production. The aim is to get a realistic picture of life and work on a farm, between romanticisation and existential threat, through this practical experience.

The post A day at the farm appeared first on Salzkammergut 2024.

About the farm: 12 mother cows and their calves, two pigs for subsistence, a few chickens, meadows, fruit crops and forest. Her ancestors have run the Bergsimon farm for centuries. Originally, the trained carpenter did not want to take over her parents’ inheritance, but in the meantime she is a farmer with heart and soul.

Themes that (among other things) are worked on together:

  • Representation of small farmers’ interests
  • Species-appropriate cattle feeding: The importance of meadows for biodiversity, the landscape and animal-friendly feeding in contrast to concentrated feed.
  • The genius of native fruit trees: they yield a lot with little effort. Starting with the cherries in spring, the Bergsimon farm had its own fruit all year round. Christine and her family are working to ensure self-sufficiency again throughout the year.
  • Importance of small farms for the region, society and food sovereignty in general

Schedule (10:00 – 16:00):

  • Introductions – who is all here
  • Farm presentation incl. tour of the farm
  • preparing dough together for farmer’s doughnuts, delivering potato or pumpkin soup
  • Preparing must/juice pressing – collecting fruit together, setting up machine
  • Lunch – farmer’s doughnuts and soup
  • juice pressing (with hydraulic juice press) incl. direct tasting

Max. number of participants: 10 – 12 persons
Participation only after registration by email to: veranstaltung@viacampesina.at
Please bring weatherproof (work) clothing and shoes! A photographer will be on site to document the day. By taking part, you automatically agree to be photographed.

You will get to know the work of an artist who lived in Gmunden.
You will discover his pictures and motifs.
You will create your own picture of the painter in your favourite colours.
Your parents are very welcome to join us in the museum (museum café).
Bring your friends.
Please take slippers and felt-tip pens with you.
We have prepared juice and fruit for you.

Born in Vienna, Detter spent his youth with rigorous training at the cadet school in Prague. In 1905 he studied as a pupil of Franz von Stuck at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After spending time abroad, mainly as a portraitist in Germany, Czechoslovakia and Switzerland, he came to Gmunden in 1945. It was in the town of Trause that he finally found a large circle of friends and a suitable atmosphere for his artistic work. This was followed by works and exhibitions in Linz, Vienna, Vaduz and numerous other places. In addition to portraits, the artist also devoted himself to genre painting, still lifes and scene paintings with religious content, among other things, in an attempt to translate traditional themes into the new age.

THE ART OF CRAFT presents regional and international craftspeople and artists who can be seen at work around Hand.Werk.Haus Salzkammergut, Hof Neuwildenstein and the Stephaneum.

Top-class regional, national and international craftspeople and artists invite you to the public day around the Hand.Werk.Haus Salzkammergut!

As artist in residence, Pascal Oudet (FR) shows woodturning at the highest level, together with Paul Wögerer-Moreau (AT), Jakob Gamsjäger (AT), Armin Etschmann (AT) and Bernadette Persterer (AT).

Metal artist Andreas Schönangerer (AT) is working with young sculptors and craftspeople at SCALA Experience on an object in public space, and you can gain an impression of the artistry of metal artist in residence Rebekah Frank (US) at her temporary studio in the Stephaneum. By the way: Many thanks to Fronius for the technical equipment!

This studio will also be used by US metal artist Donna E. Price (US), who has been living in Altmünster for several years. Like Rebekah, Donna has a strong connection to the Penland School of Craft, an important source of inspiration for SCALA Salzkammergut Craft Art Lab.

Another SCALA artist in residence is Sadatsugu Watanabe (JP). The Japanese shokunin (master craftsman) specialises in traditional wood joints. Thanks to the support of Magma Tools and EU Japan Fest, we will be able to showcase his legendary skills with Japanese saws and planes. Obertraun sculptor and boat builder Wolfgang Müllegger (AT) will also take up the theme of ‘connections’ in his work on site.

Lenka Cain Pavlickova (CZ) will not only build her marionettes, but also bring them to life in a playful way. Gerhard Stöglehner (AT) will introduce the art of armchair weaving, Claudia Gams (AT) will show samples of her work as a milliner. Daniel Rainer (AT), Thomas Kari (AT) and Thomas Bochsbichler (AT) will be on site with a clay workshop in collaboration with project ‘Simple Smart Buildings’. Goldsmith Herbert Trucker (AT) and watchmaker Florian Dostal (AT) will be joining us directly from Lake Attersee with their work tables.

And last but not least: the SCALA Connect sculpture park around Neuwildenstein Castle will be opened at 11.00 am!

SCALA Salzkammergut Craft Art Lab

A new space for encounters in the Hand.Werk.Haus Salzkammergut is intended to serve as a “central point of departure, base camp and space for action”. SCALA invites the world to blaze new trails between art and crafts!

In the workshop, the participants in the N.E.S.T. New Earth Species Think Tank will tamp the floor of the walk-in sculpture by hand and thus also participate in the artistic creation process. At the same time, they learn about professional material preparation and preparation as well as the various processes for compacting the material. The teaching of craftsmanship and technology is combined with the sensory, collective and experimental experiences of artistic creation and leaves a lasting impression.
What consistency and moisture does the base material need?
How thick can the filled layer be before we have to compact it again?
How is the surface finally treated? Is the rammed earth floor really robust?
These and other questions are clarified in the joint construction process with Elias Brunmayr and immediately put into practice.

Elias Brunmayr is an expert on rammed earth in theory and practice. He graduated from BOKU Vienna in 2022 with a thesis entitled “Rammed earth in landscape architecture”. In his company “Atelier Loam”, he has since focussed on rammed earth as a design element in landscape architecture.

During the joint workshops, the aim is to change the everyday view of things through experiments and tasks and to break down connections – to give them a different meaning or nonsense. The Analog Sonntag  team describes the voluntary renunciation of digital aids as a good exercise to sharpen one’s own perception and create a welcome change from one-dimensional channels such as television.

ANALOG! continues this tradition with contemporary artistic references and offers a series of productions that deal with the former Stephaneum secondary school.

Catherine Flood und May Rosenthal invite you to come and learn how to make natural dyes for textiles using plants and participate in making a ‘clootie tree’ in the monastery garden. This is an ancient Scottish custom in which colourful scraps of fabric are imbued with a wish, often for healing, and tied to a tree. The belief is that as the pieces of cloth fade and disintegrate, the problems fade away with them.
The workshop is part of the artist in residency project ‘Curing: Salt, Textile, Text’ which explores salt and colour in relation to food, fabric and practices of preservation, recipe writing and healing.

Catherine Flood and May Rosenthal Sloan are two British curators and creative practitioners, based in France and Scotland respectively. In 2019 they curated the exhibition ‘Food: Bigger than the plate’ at the V&A in London. Their combined research interests focus on the interconnections of art and design with everyday life and the natural world through themes of food, farming, soil and natural fibres.

Monastery open from 12-18:00

Daily programme at ko-ko.org

At the centre of KOKO is the process-oriented examination of motives of community and joint action as well as the handling of nature, the environment and resources. KOKO develops a prototypical place of community creation and invites participation in the collaborative work process. Through dialogue and exchange between the local population and local, regional and international artists as well as visitors, a lively meeting place with a varied programme of interventions, exhibitions, performances, workshops and discussions is being created. For this applied research laboratory, a temporary, changeable work and action space will be created on the Laudach. The structure is intended to enable community-building practices strengthen social interaction and promote experimental approaches. The starting point for the collaborative process is the exploration of traditional artistic, cultural and craft practices from the Salzkammergut as well as stories and themes around the river space of the Laudach.

Art Your Village

This project deals with local identities, primarily within the smaller locations within the Salzkammergut region. International artists or artist groups engage with these locations and develop projects in the form of interventions over the course of the year.

What you can look forward to:

  • In-depth information on key terms and concepts
  • Plenty of space to ask questions
  • Ample opportunity to talk to each other about queer life in all its facets

Maximum number of participants: 20 people

Workshop leader: Birgit Hofstätter (management of Frauen*forum Salzkammergut & content-related project management of the Capital of Culture project Salzkammerqueer) and Tamara Geyer (active in anti-discrimination work and regional development & content-related collaboration on the Salzkammerqueer project)

And afterwards (from 20:30): LET’S PARTYYYY!

Salzkammerqueer

In order to facilitate the exchange of experiences among like-minded people and seekers in rural areas, the women’s contact points are contributing to the establishment of a queer community in the Salzkammergut with this project. The aim is to initially provide a home base and infrastructure for an active community that will exist beyond the duration of the project. The second goal is an experimental short film series and artistic photo positions that communicate queer life in the Salzkammergut via social media.

In addition to various folk dances in a circle and in pairs, such as the Styrian or the Landler, you will also learn simple social dances from hip hop and look for similarities and parallels. What connects us? What strengthens us as a community? How can we as a community create a safe space for everyone?
In the end, it’s about having fun together and experiencing the physical connection to yourself, as a couple or as a collective in a circle in a creative exchange! Join us and be inspired by different dance cultures and their music!

Registration at: office@volksliedwerk.at, workshop fee € 30, the workshop is free if you take part in the Volxfest. Discounts for students, pupils, senior citizens, military service…

Through years of artistic & alpinistic occupation with the Totes Gebirge, the mountain landscape has become a familiar space. Movement through the mountains – walking – is also an important aspect of the exploration of the landscape. Of course, hiking together with friends is also of central importance here. The joint exploration of the Totes Gebirge will be expressed in various artistic works. The lichen, which can be found everywhere in the mountains, depicts this commonality. In the artistic realisation, screen prints will be made from the collected lichen. Photos will also document the time spent in the Totes Gebirge. These can be printed or shown in the form of slides. The Scharnstein railway station will act as a base camp and will continue to develop. During excursions to the Totes Gebirge, artistic ideas will be tried out and realised together with other artists. New observations and collages of the Totes Gebirge can be created in workshops with children.

Workshops

Saturday 04/05 14-17 – Blue printing & painting with algae / children’s workshop with Ulla Szwajor & Jakob Krinzinger
Saturday 01/06 14-17 – Building barricades / Idea & practice with Johann Schoiswohl

Exhibition

Don’t talk, do https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/en/veranstaltungen/dont-talk-do/ Sat, 20 Apr 2024 00:02:58 +0000 https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/veranstaltungen/dont-talk-do/ What does the living of the future look like in rural areas? Ways of working and living have changed and the challenges associated with this are different: it is a matter of affordability, of the sharing of resources, of supporting each other in everyday life, the rethinking of classic forms of living and about coming to terms with silent reserves. During the European Capital of Culture, the RURASMUS Research Institute will invite students to explore the topic of living with new perspectives and transformation processes in rural space in selected communities throughout the region.

The cultural capital Ebensee looks back on a rich history, which is inextricably linked to the establishment of the salt works in 1607. For a long time, Marktgasse was the main shopping street and therefore not only the commercial centre of Ebensee, but also the social centre due to its high density of inns. Together with the Soleweg behind it (which runs along the former brine pipeline), it was also the most important link between the Traunbrücke bridge and the Steinerner Brücke bridge. The older generation still remembers the time when Marktgasse was the vibrant centre of Ebensee. However, this has changed over the course of history due to infrastructural changes. The inns died, the retail businesses closed and left behind a place that is characterised above all by its high proportion of vacancies.

To revitalise Marktgasse, workshops and events are being held in which interested citizens can get involved. The workshops will be led by our RURASMUS student Tanja Stapelbroek, who will focus on approaches to using this gem in the centre of the Salinengemeinde.

The seventh and final farm day in this series takes us to a solidarity vegetable farm in Steinfelden/Pettenbach.

Michaela Jancsy and Reingard Prohaska cultivate 50 different vegetable crops for 85 harvest shares on an area of one hectare of land and three greenhouses right next to the “Green Earth World”. Conserving resources, working in harmony with nature and supplying the region with high-quality, healthy and diverse organic vegetables are top priorities.

On this farm day, we can find out how solidarity farming is run and what goals are pursued. What are the conclusions of two women who have started their own farming business? How can you grow vegetables in times of advancing weather extremes?

Programme

  • Get together and introduce yourself
  • Get to know the farm and make an organic herb butter
  • Depending on the weather, cultivate in the field or in the greenhouse and/or sow and plant together
  • Taste seasonal vegetables in the Grüne Erde Bistro. If you’re feeling peckish at lunchtime, you can buy something in the bistro or bring something with you.
  • Learn about field ecosystems and above- and below-ground field dwellers.

Max. Number of participants: 15 people
Participation only after registration by email to: veranstaltung@viacampesina.at
