Changing rooms, pronouns, retirement age: the distinction between men and women is as ubiquitous as it is self-evident. In conversations with non-binary people, Jona Moro explored the fact that the omnipresence of binary gender does not end with the ‘toilet issue’, but is inscribed in the lives and identity of non-binary people: What does it mean to live in a society that negates one’s own (gender) existence? What changes do non-binary people demand from politics and society?

Lecture by Jona Moro, actor, gender researcher, activist, Vienna

Salzkammerqueer

In order to facilitate the exchange of experiences among like-minded people and those looking for support in rural areas, the women’s centres are helping to establish a queer community in the Salzkammergut with this project. The aim is to initially provide a home base and infrastructure for an active community that will exist beyond the duration of the project. The second goal is an experimental short film series and artistic photo positions that communicate queer life in the Salzkammergut via social media.

The post Dialogue: Creative Industries appeared first on Salzkammergut 2024.

Impulse: Eberhard Schrempf (GF Creative Industries Styria)
Dialogue partners: Stephan Skrobar (ski guide & alpine instructor, head of a communications agency, Bad Mitterndorf) & Sophie Rastl (graphic designer, artist, Altaussee)
Moderation: Günther Marchner

Traditionally, work and business in rural regions are clichédly associated with agriculture, crafts and tourism, even though the service sector dominates everywhere. Almost unnoticed, new employment potential and, above all, micro-enterprises in the creative industries are emerging in rural regions: be it in the music industry, in communication and advertising or in the diverse applications of digitalisation. Many of these jobs are no longer confined to urban centres. If the connection to the right networks is right, the village can also become a workplace. For example, when two locals work in the communications industry in Vienna and Bad Mitterndorf at the same time. When new health and exercise programmes grow. When a co-working space revitalises the village centre or when you can work in the advertising and communications industry or software development for companies in metropolitan areas without having to move.
But what is actually meant by “creative industries”? What are its special features? What strategy is the province of Styria pursuing in this regard as a business location? What potential do the creative industries have in rural regions? What potential lies dormant in the Ausseerland-Salzkammergut tourism region?
Eberhard Schrempf, Managing Director of Creative Industries Styria, will provide an insight into the diverse and growing world of the Styrian creative industries and the potential in rural regions. In the subsequent dialogue, Stephan Skrobar, ski guide & alpine instructor, head of a communications agency and co-initiator of the coworking spaces “Das Färberhaus” and “BM4” (Bad Mitterndorf) and Sophie Rastl, musician, graphic designer and visual artist (Altaussee) will share their approaches and experiences with their industry and with self-employment in the region as representatives of this sector.

The “Zukunftsbühne Hinterberg” focuses on “New perspectives for rural regions beyond the mainstream” as the centrepiece of the Capital of Culture activities of the E.I.K.E.-Forum – Woferlstall. It searches for traces of future potential and innovative approaches in the region – with a view to general and European developments.

1st part of the evening:

 • Scarlett de Mehigan (bodyworker/soundhealer) will once again open the evening with a cocoa ceremony.
 • Judith Raupp (performance artist) will help us to experience our own physical limits in a body-related workshop. The movements of the group will form a performative dance harmony.
 • Dr. med univ Doreen Jaenich (physician and psychologist) will specifically address the innermost, individual sensitivities as an artist in a guided group constellation. Creative blockages and the flow of inspiration will be explored.

2nd part of the evening:

 • We will then be invited to the table. Dinner will be served and together, over a glass of wine, we will reflect on the input of the previous evening.

Scarlett Dee has been a spiritual practitioner for over 30 years. Her journey has taken her deep into the practices of yoga, tantra, and breathwork, where she has dedicated herself to guiding others on their paths to self-discovery and empowerment, especially through yoga teacher trainings and retreats. Scarletts true passion lies in helping women connect with their inner strength, build unshakable confidence, and live authentically. She specifically loves holding space for women who want to be badass, fully confident, and unapologetically empowered through the power of their breath.
And that’s exactly what she is going to do for us, opening the nights to get us all on the same level.

Judith Raupp lives and works in Vienna. She is currently studying site-specific art at the Angewandte and works at the interface between sculpture and performance.
In her workshop, she will introduce physical exercises from somatics, yin yoga and theatre work to loosen up the body and move through the space together in a protected setting.

Dr Doreen Jaenichen is a specialist in integrative and general medicine and runs the Mayrlife health spa in Altaussee. For 30 years, she has been working on the interaction of various natural healing methods, spirituality and conventional medicine, effectively supporting healing processes.
Being completely there. How can I live my own expression in times full of expectations from outside and high demands from within? How can I give myself and my creativity space and a voice?
How can I live a healthy relationship with myself and with others?
A short keynote speech at the beginning will open up the space. We will playfully embark on a journey to ourselves, feel where we can discover new sides of ourselves and express them. Relaxed, we will experience and create an evening full of vitality, lightness and joy and also integrate the unloved where it has not yet been allowed to be part of the whole.

These skill Set Anuza uses as a Life Coach. She will be talking about the Authentic self and how to open this force up. The talk will be held in English and if needed translated live.

Yatra Mann is a singer/songwriter and performance artist. She is studying International Relations. Her heart beats for the “beyond” and the question of how man can be united with man. She is currently focussing on voice training and acting classes in Vienna and Munich.
She will lead a workshop focussing on finding the inner “true” voice of our guests.

Keynote

Playing with perceptions
Heiner Goebbels

“His melodic and rhythmic flair form a strong foundation on which emotionality, attitude and humanity are expressed in equal measure. He has constantly challenged the audience’s perception. “*

The work of the internationally renowned and multi-award-winning composer and theatre maker Heiner Goebbels is characterised by his play with perceptions. The artist creates spaces for the imagination with challenging aesthetics that can take the audience’s breath away or be as harsh and gloomy as a landscape with open-cast lignite mining. He finds audiences all over the world who are happy to accept this challenge and who, according to Goebbels himself, should ideally be “curious and very open-minded”. Because they will experience something with all their senses, something unheard of, something new and therefore strange. The artistic border crosser’s search for the unknown and unnoticed is accompanied by social commitment and political awareness.

He repeatedly follows in the footsteps of Lily Rechinger, daughter of the spa doctor in Bad Aussee, who began collecting plants in 1901 and published the first comprehensive work on the flora of Ausseerland in 1965. The lecture not only sheds light on historical aspects, but also presents current discoveries and new additions to the flora of Bad Aussee in order to convey a comprehensive picture of the current botanical diversity of this region.

Spontaneous participants are also very welcome! Please remember to wear suitable footwear.

Gravity and Growth

To what extent is the human being a part of nature and how can we shape a sustainable world? The alpine garden in Bad Aussee is known as an oasis of botanical diversity. In times where knowledge regarding landscape and gardening is becoming increasingly lost, its significance as a place of recreation and mediation must be emphasized. In this project, it serves as a basis and space of yearning for the scientific and artistic examination of biodiversity, ecosystems as well as nature- friendly sustainability strategies and the relationship of human beings to the pre-alpine and alpine landscapes.

New European Bauhaus Festival | Side-Event https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/en/veranstaltungen/new-european-bauhaus-festival-side-event-2/ Sat, 23 Mar 2024 00:01:27 +0000 https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/veranstaltungen/new-european-bauhaus-festival-side-event-2/ The history and present of tourism in Austria are literally materialised in its tourist building culture in all the ambivalence inherent in tourism as an economic factor and social phenomenon. Therefore, the examination of the topic of "tourist building culture" opens up a broad spectrum of illustrative material and the resulting questions regarding the challenges that tourism-influenced regions will face in the future with regard to the socio-ecological transformation that is also imminent in the tourism sector.

The post New European Bauhaus Festival | Side-Event appeared first on Salzkammergut 2024.

]]>
In particular, this discussion also allows us to sound out the design possibilities that arise when tourism construction and the associated investment potential is understood and pursued as a driver of integrally conceived, sustainable development. More specifically: If it is programmatically and concertedly aligned with what is being formulated today in the light of the Sustainable Development Goals and is already being implemented in many places on a pilot basis in initiatives such as the “New European Bauhaus” and its guiding principles of sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion.

The Salzkammergut is rich in examples of the diversity and the aesthetic as well as socio-cultural significance of tourist building culture – from the “Imperial Bad Ischl”, the summer houses in Ausseerland, the hotels and apartment buildings that have emerged in the course of increasing mass tourism, to the chalet villages that have emerged more recently and are associated with new forms of parahotels.

For “Salzkammergut 2024”, too, the question arises as to what form and “face” sustainable tourism could take in the future and what development would be desirable for all those involved. In this context, the event “Touristic building culture – motor of sustainable development” is intended to examine the role that tourist building culture can play in this development. The leitmotif triad of the New European Bauhaus – sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion – will serve as a framework.

In this lecture, Christiane Seufferlein, a flax expert with roots in the Salzkammergut, imparts a great deal of knowledge about the cultivation and care of flax. This means that anyone interested can grow flax themselves at home, regardless of whether they have a windowsill, a balcony, a garden or a whole field at their disposal.

Christiane Seufferlein will also provide insights into her research into the history of flax textiles in Austria and internationally. She presents the project “Berta’s Flax”, in which she collects women’s stories from her adopted home of Mühlviertel in this context.

Drawing a Thread

The former weaving and spinning mill Ebensee is the hub of the project, which addresses the history of the working world of women, role attributions, social achievements and controversies.

It is probably the finest and most enchanting music that Lehár has ever written,” was one critic’s comment on the premiere of the operetta “Der Sterngucker” in 1916.
Nonetheless, the operetta fell into oblivion and can hardly be found on the repertoire today.

In addition to Lehár’s musical genius, the play has a typically cheerful and romantic plot: Four young ladies from high society are looking for happiness in love. However, a reluctantly engaged architect, a jealous brother and an odd astronaut all get involved and turn their endeavours into hilarious chaos…

The Lehár Festival Bad Ischl presents this long-hidden musical treasure in a semi-staged production with a high-calibre cast.

In Africa, his artistic impulse gained global perspectives. Sculpting with clay grew into the aspiration of building artistic design with earth. The modeling of tiles and stoves turned into sculpting and constructing on a larger scale: the reshaping of the ground into a habitable (spatial) sculpture. From the beginning, he was particularly interested in the rammed earth technique, a process in which the material is not subsequently disguised or embellished.

k.u.k. critical and controversial

Sometimes the imperial legacy weighs heavily on Bad Ischl, and alternative perspectives are largely ignored – kitsch and clichés dominate, with history being clotted in the shadow of the Habsburg myth. An exhibition in the public space as well as talks and statements by European experts dare to take a differentiated look at the imperial and royal period.

As a vision and motivation for her work, she explores architecture as a medium to build cultural and individual trust, support local economies and individual trust, support the local economy, and promote the ecologicalbalance, thus improving people’s lives.
For her, a building possesses sustainable and aesthetic value only when, if its design, structure, technology, and use of materials are in harmony with the location with the site, the user and the socio-cultural context.

Simple Smart Buildings

What materials and techniques were used in the past to build resilient houses? Which of these construction methods have proven to be durable, sustainable and beautiful in the long term? An exploration with workshops and lectures as a participatory knowledge transfer.

The “New Right”, which started in France in the 1960s and spread rapidly in the German-speaking countries, sees itself as a countercultural elite to the decadent West and advocates a renewal of Europe in the national-ethnic sense. It seeks a connection and influence in the middle of society and uses social crises to achieve this. It does this with new language and new concepts, as the terms “metapolitics” or “ethnopluralism” of the “Identitarian Movement” show. A musical counterpoint as a follow-up to the dialogue is provided by the gipsy swing jazz of the Quartet Paganin-Soatn.

The cultural scientist and artist Sandra Chatterjee gives an insight into “The 200-year counterculture of anti-colonial resistance”. Since the beginning of European colonialism, there has also been a history of cultural and political counter-designs for the liberation and renewal of colonized societies. This critique of the “West”, which has developed over centuries, has produced important intellectuals such as Rabindranath Tagore (the first Asian Nobel Prize winner for literature) and Aimé Fernand Césaire, as well as leaders of national liberation movements such as Hồ Chí Minh, Mao Zedong and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. In the lecture, Sandra Chatterjee discusses some examples of different models of anti-colonial resistance.

The Aussee duo Franz Thalhammer & Toni Burger will provide a regional musical counterpoint with “Songs from the Undergrowth”.

Unconventional. Against the mainstream. Counter-culture. Against those up there? When one thinks of this term in the context of the Salzkammergut, something obvious comes to mind: Independent. Stubborn. Resistant. Whether reality or cliché, somehow the idea of the unconventional and of demarcation against central power (also a legacy of Protestantism?), against appropriation and conformity seems to be associated with this region – even if it is perhaps only half the truth. This concerns the history of the region, especially the history of a regional workers’ culture that came into opposition and resistance to National Socialism. And it concerns the emphasis on what is special and unique about the region – right up to tourism marketing. It concerns youth cultures and cultural initiatives that fought (or fought) for a place for a different, own culture – also against the dominating power of traditionalism and “folk culture ideology”. It concerns resistance against the raging madness of a development of growth and civilisation that has gone off the rails. A resistance that expresses itself in various forms of drop-out and withdrawal: as a flight to the countryside or as a retreat to ideal islands and closed communities. It concerns independent music cultures and literary experiments beyond the mainstream of the music industry, whose protagonists find their own artistic and musical forms of expression – from the underground to folk music. The forms of expression and manifestation of the unconventional to the point of countercultural are endless. They can also be found in this region in particular.

Programme: Artistic projects on the theme
(23 – 26 May 2024, during the day)

Following the quote: “Modern arts [are] often an aesthetic expression of countercultures” (Behrens, 1999), “UnConvention” invites artists to explore the topic of counterculture. The performers and visual artists bring the theme to life in a wide variety of formal languages. The reference to Bad Mitterndorf and the region follows an accompanying guiding question of “UnConvention”: “What does counterculture have to do with our region?”. To this end, the Woferlstall presents the following artists with “UnConvention”: Linda Luv, Jacqueline Korber & Nina Fountedakis, Michael Pöllinger, Judith Raupp, Maria Kanzler & Leah Dorner.

Linda Luv (Frankfurt am Main) presents herself with small performative actions in public space, which will culminate in a lecture performance. She deals with the personal everyday space of the mother/woman as a potential for counter-cultural action. Everyday life is an individual space of experience, a space that is revolutionised by her actions “visible disruptive factors”. In the course of the UnConvention days, we will work on examples of performative tactics to produce (each individual) disturbances and thus queer prevailing cultural practices.
Michael Pöllinger (Bad Mitterndorf) known as Pölliösopoda intervenes in public space with the means of a peculiar and publicly accessible hut erected in the town centre. Based on traditional Tippie-like huts built by travelling shepherds, visitors can attend interactive performances during UnConvention. There will also be a “Live Disembarkation” and an invitation to “Bush Craft” (living in and from the forest).
Judith Raupp (Vienna/Munich) will use the public space, in the Bad Mitterndorf area she will trace her Röttingen roots. (Röttingen is a partner municipality of Bad Mitterndorf). Her strongly localised approach will be made comprehensible in a playful act. The coincidence of the card game is intended to mix counter-cultural fragments of the two partner communities and lead to a new historical narrative, a new memory.
Jacqueline Korber (Atzbach & Bad Mitterndorf) will develop a linguistically performative framework in collaboration with Nina Fountedakis (Austria). The themes of punk, anti-sexism and veganism will be interwoven and embedded by the artists in the thesis of veganism as a counterculture in the present day. Jacqueline Korber will visually underpin the readings with one of her renowned photo series.
