This means working together, but also eating, discussing, tasting and getting a taste of farm production. The aim is to get a realistic picture of life and work on a farm, between romanticisation and existential threat, through this practical experience.

About the farm: 12 mother cows and their calves, two pigs for subsistence, a few chickens, meadows, fruit crops and forest. Her ancestors have run the Bergsimon farm for centuries. Originally, the trained carpenter did not want to take over her parents’ inheritance, but in the meantime she is a farmer with heart and soul.

Themes that (among other things) are worked on together:

  • Representation of small farmers’ interests
  • Species-appropriate cattle feeding: The importance of meadows for biodiversity, the landscape and animal-friendly feeding in contrast to concentrated feed.
  • The genius of native fruit trees: they yield a lot with little effort. Starting with the cherries in spring, the Bergsimon farm had its own fruit all year round. Christine and her family are working to ensure self-sufficiency again throughout the year.
  • Importance of small farms for the region, society and food sovereignty in general

Schedule (10:00 – 16:00):

  • Introductions – who is all here
  • Farm presentation incl. tour of the farm
  • preparing dough together for farmer’s doughnuts, delivering potato or pumpkin soup
  • Preparing must/juice pressing – collecting fruit together, setting up machine
  • Lunch – farmer’s doughnuts and soup
  • juice pressing (with hydraulic juice press) incl. direct tasting

Max. number of participants: 10 – 12 persons
Participation only after registration by email to: veranstaltung@viacampesina.at
Please bring weatherproof (work) clothing and shoes! A photographer will be on site to document the day. By taking part, you automatically agree to be photographed.

The excursions are open to the public and some are subject to a charge.

Excursion #1 with storyteller Helmut Wittmann

From the thing that is so much more than just a thing
Helmut Wittmann tells stories about the playful perception of reality and legends from the Almtal valley on a walk through Grünau.
Meeting point: Pfarrhof, Grünau im Almtal, 10 am.
Duration 2 hours.
Abschluss – if desired – at the Almwirtinnen
Curious? maerchenerzaehler.at

Excursion #2 with Chief Forester Fritz Wolf and the Almtal Forest School

Forest of the future—playful introduction to the WWW (Wald-Wunder-Welt)
The renaturalisation of forestry, 40 years in the making, can be experienced in the forest with the forester. Drought, storms, heat, bark beetles – climate change is affecting our forests! On this walk through the forest, we observe the soil, shrubs, herbs, small creatures – and the trees. Together we will consider what this forest will look like in 10, 50 or 100 years. What should the forest of the future look like? This will be discussed in detail.
Meeting point: Waldschule Almtal; Scharnstein, Fischerbühel; 10 am.
Duration 2 to 3 hours.
Curious? naturschauspiel.at/naturschauspiele/wald-der-zukunft

Excursion #3 with hiking guide and herb educator Sabina Haslinger

Off to Alpine paradise!
We hike small Alpine paradises together! On the way through the marvellous landscape, we learn all kinds of interesting and unusual facts about mountains, alpine pastures, forests & plants and can experience nature with all our senses. The fairy-tale & fabulously beautiful nature lets us forget everyday life. We can breathe a sigh of relief and recharge our batteries. A special experience is singing yodelling and juchitzing together. Together we breathe new life into this old alpine culture!
Meeting point: Pfarrhof, Grünau im Almtal, 10 am.
Duration 2 to 3 hours.
Curious? naturschauspiel.at/naturschauspiele/auf-ins-alm-paradies

Excursion #4 with geologist Dr. Johannes Weidinger

How was the Almsee formed?
A gigantic natural event took place around the Jagasimmerl, where a once mighty glacier was melting at the end of the late ice age around 15,000 years ago: 500 million cubic metres of Dachstein limestone came loose in the rear Hetzau not far from the Großer Priel (2515 m) and formed a mass that left a trail of devastation stretching for kilometres. Here, at the confluence with the Almtal, this “landslide in the Almtal” split, merged with river sediments out of the valley and formed a bar upstream, creating the Almsee. This lake, which was originally probably more than twice as large as it is today, was filled in with river sediment over the millennia by the alluvial fan of the Weißeneckbach in the Schwarzenbrunn area and significantly reduced in size.
Meeting point: Car park at Jagasimmerl, Grünau im Almtal, 10 am.
Duration 2 to 3 hours.
Curious? naturschauspiel.at/guides/weidinger-johannes

Excursion #5 with ornithologist Dr Josef Hemetsberger

Flapping and chattering in the Almtal
What did behavioural research mean in the days of Konrad Lorenz and what does it mean today? How and by whom did the flock of greylag geese come to the Almtal? How do you behave when observing wild animals? How and why are birds ringed? We gain access to the specialist knowledge about animal species at the Konrad Lorenz Research Centre (KLF), a scientific institution of the University of Vienna. We explore the way of life, behaviour and special features of the research centre’s model species in a technically sound but comprehensible way and immerse ourselves in part of the Almtal’s history.
Meeting point: Fischerau 11, Grünau im Almtal, 10 am
Duration 2 to 3 hours.
Abschluss – Gastronomy in the Cumberland Wildlife Park
Curious? naturschauspiel.at/naturschauspiele/flattern-und-schnattern-im-almtal

Excursion #6 with forest educator and local historian Wolfgang Rab

To the forest paradise
On our hike in the forest paradise in the Almtal valley, we not only discover the healing powers of trees for us humans and learn how to “breathe deeply” in the forest atmosphere, but also learn lots of useful and interesting facts about the biodiversity of trees, plants and animals. On our expedition, we take a closer look at this diverse habitat and the deciduous trees typical of the nature reserve, as well as prominent conifers. Alder, ash, spruce and mountain pine – to name just a few – will reveal their secrets to us.
Meeting point: Grünau im Almtal, Gasthof Seehaus car park, by the lime tree; 10 am.
Duration 2 to 3 hours.
Curious? naturschauspiel.at/naturschauspiele/auf-ins-wald-paradies

Excursion #7 with herbalist and water instructor Maria Hageneder

Enjoying nature on the Alm river
We hike leisurely along the Almuferweg trail and walk through it as if we were in a large open-air nature spa. Our hike is always along the alpine pasture or by the alpine lake, where we not only learn about the five elements of Kneipp therapy for a healthy life in theory, but also experience them with body and soul. As we Kneipp through the forest along the beautiful green alpine river, we utilise the forces of nature for our health and well-being. We enjoy water treatments, get moving in a playful way, learn about medicinal herbs and think about a beneficial diet.
Meeting point: Grünau im Almtal; Pfarrhof, 10 am.
Duration 2 to 3 hours.
Curious? naturschauspiel.at/naturschauspiele/naturgenuss-am-almfluss

Excursion #8 at Cumberland Wildlife Park Grünau

Experience Nature Animal Park
Welcome to the heart of nature! On this excursion through the wildlife park, we get an overview of the Cumberland Wildlife Park Grünau. Selected animal species are introduced on a short walk through the wildlife park. We will learn interesting facts about their occurrence and distribution, species protection programmes and behavioural research at the Konrad Lorenz Research Centre. With the help of illustrative materials, biology becomes tangible.
Meeting point: Grünau im Almtal, entrance Cumbelrand Wildpark, Fischerau 12; 10 am.
Duration 2 to 3 hours.
Abschluss – Gastronomy
Curious? wildpark.at

Afterwards

The world’s first combination of an 18 metre fulldome with a saltwater floating facility opens the window of opportunity for solar-autonomous space flights in Bad Ischl for a month.

Immerse yourself in highly concentrated salt brine and the silence of space. Due to the strong buoyancy in the body-warm brine, you will experience the immersive effect of high-resolution 360° space projections and the view of the globe from outside, in a state of weightlessness and deep relaxation.

  • Meeting point: Foyer of the thermal baths (not hotel)
  • Minimum age: 14 years
  • Minimum height: 1.40 metres
  • Total duration: approx. 100 minutes – of which pure flight time approx. 40 minutes
  • Protective suits are worn for floating.
    These are available in 3 versions: Small | Universal | XLarge / height (cm): 140-160 |160-190 | 190-210 / weight (kg): 40-80 | 55-95 | 85-130
The protective suits are completely waterproof and are worn over light clothing (including socks). The protective suits used are cleaned and disinfected after each use.
  • The water level in the floatation system is 40 cm. Due to the buoyancy and the protective suit, it is impossible for non-swimmers to sink.
  • A supervisor is permanently present for safety.
  • WARNING: SOLENAUT*INN are exposed to darkness, stroboscopic light effects and loud sound effects, among other things.

Barriers

The Eurothermen Lounge and the brine space harbour are barrier-free accessible (underground partly meadow). The brine platform of the brine space harbour is accessible for people who can fulfil the following requirements alone or with assistance: Moving on partly uneven meadow, independent bathing in a public swimming pool, entering a 50cm high platform, lying in 40cm of brine. There are also requirements to put on the immersion suit, to follow instructions exactly and to be able to remain in silence for 40 minutes as if visiting a theatre.
Personal assistants can accompany the person to the edge of the brine platform and only assist the person from the outside when entering and immersing themselves in the brine. For special needs such as these, it is necessary to register at floating@solenaut-innen.space 4 days before the visit.
Due to the prototypical nature of this experience, it cannot be offered on a fully inclusive basis – your indulgence is requested.

Maximum body dimensions for the immersion suits (circumference in each case):
Shoulders 120cm / chest 140cm / stomach 140cm / hips 133cm / thighs single 76cm

The seventh and final farm day in this series takes us to a solidarity vegetable farm in Steinfelden/Pettenbach.

Michaela Jancsy and Reingard Prohaska cultivate 50 different vegetable crops for 85 harvest shares on an area of one hectare of land and three greenhouses right next to the “Green Earth World”. Conserving resources, working in harmony with nature and supplying the region with high-quality, healthy and diverse organic vegetables are top priorities.

On this farm day, we can find out how solidarity farming is run and what goals are pursued. What are the conclusions of two women who have started their own farming business? How can you grow vegetables in times of advancing weather extremes?

Programme

  • Get together and introduce yourself
  • Get to know the farm and make an organic herb butter
  • Depending on the weather, cultivate in the field or in the greenhouse and/or sow and plant together
  • Taste seasonal vegetables in the Grüne Erde Bistro. If you’re feeling peckish at lunchtime, you can buy something in the bistro or bring something with you.
  • Learn about field ecosystems and above- and below-ground field dwellers.

Max. Number of participants: 15 people
Participation only after registration by email to: veranstaltung@viacampesina.at

The post A day at the farm appeared first on Salzkammergut 2024.

]]>
Elisabeth took over the family farm in 2015 and has been running it full-time with great dedication since 2019. The farm has 9 hectares of grassland, some forest and a 16-strong herd of cattle. The animals are put out to pasture from mid-May and spend the summer on the low and high mountain pastures, which are looked after by the farmers themselves.

The fresh milk is processed daily into yoghurt, fresh and semi-hard cheese in the farm’s own cheese dairy. At present, all cow’s milk specialities are still 100% marketed via the farm shop, but the products will soon also be available in the surrounding shops.

What influence does agriculture in the Salzkammergut have on the landscape and tourism? What is the effect of the landscape conservation fund in Gößl? What impact do the EU organic guidelines have on a small-scale farm like the Buttererhof? We can find out about these and other questions on 8 June.

Outline of the day 08:00-16:00 (programme items may vary depending on the weather)

  • Welcome and arrival
  • Mowing green fodder
  • All about milk processing on the farm
  • Making fresh cheese or yoghurt
  • Preparing a Styrian speciality together for lunch
  • Visiting the herd of cattle on the pasture
  • Haymaking together – weather permitting . weather permitting
  • With a bit of luck, we may even be able to marvel at marmots at close range

The fifth farm day in this series is all about laying hens and arable farming and takes us to one of the oldest organic farms in the region, Biohof Tragler.

Robert farms 20 hectares of rounded arable land and produces almost everything his 1,800 laying hens need to feed themselves. He sells 90% of his eggs to wholesalers and the rest of his products to neighbouring organic shops and selected FoodCoops. In his constant endeavour to refine his farming methods in terms of agroecology, Robert took the step a few years ago to switch to Turiel dam culture

What is dam culture? What do laying hens eat to do well? Why fewer branches is sometimes more? We can answer these and other questions together with Robert on 4 May.

Outline of the day (10 am – 4 pm)

  • Arrival, introduction
  • Egg collection
  • All about feeding and chicken farming in organic agriculture
  • Cooking and eating together
  • All about arable farming and crop rotation
  • Farm and field tour
  • Communal finale

An excursion to Switzerland encouraged Thalgau’s local politicians. They came up with ideas for the seemingly unsolvable traffic situation. Where 8,000 vehicles roared through the village, they created a missing village square and the first meeting zone on a country road in Austria.
On the bus journey, we learn about architectural guidelines for Ebensee and get in the mood for Vöcklabruck. There, an agenda process has been able to initiate concrete projects to revitalise the town centre. Along the way, an architectural jewel of the Salzkammergut proves that remodelling culture is the future.

Meeting point: 12:50 car park Landungsplatz Ebensee (departure 13:00)
Arrival: 21:30 Ebensee
Registration required: anmeldung@landluft.at, packed lunch on the bus

Programme

  • Conversion of Unterach am Attersee kindergarten
    dunkelschwarz, Hohengasser Wirnsberger Architects
  • Building culture community Thalgau
John Grubinger (Mayor), Lisa Frenkenberger (Deputy Mayor)
  • “Small town biotope” Vöcklabruck
    Petra Wimmer (Chairwoman)

Dinner at the pizzeria “de Michele” in Vöcklabruck (pizza world champion 2023)
On the bus: Isabel Stumfol (LandLuft), Johannes Meinhart (Regionalmanagement OÖ) Moderation: Anneke Essl, LandLuft

A day at the farm https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/en/veranstaltungen/a-day-at-the-farm-4/ Tue, 13 Feb 2024 00:01:12 +0000 https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/veranstaltungen/a-day-at-the-farm-4/ On the fourth farm visit in this series, we have the honour of visiting Simon Kienesberger, Pauline Kienesberger-Lahnsteiner and their two children Malis and Kilian on their farm "Starl" in Ebensee. Here we have the opportunity to discover one of the oldest houses in Ebensee and follow Simon as he works on the farm.

Everything is done by hand and full-time - how can you still make a living from it these days? How do you milk goats without a milking machine? And how is the raw milk then processed? How is an ox completely utilised? We will learn about these and other exciting questions on this farm day.

Simon took over his parents’ farm in 2018 and, with his many small businesses, is now his main source of income. His wife Pauline, a primary school teacher who is currently on maternity leave, found her way into farming through the “My farm – your experience” course. Together they run the farm almost exclusively through direct marketing. The farm consists of 6 hectares of their own land and 10 hectares of leased land. There is one billy goat and 10 dairy goats, 12-15 steers (Carinthian Blond cattle), 50-70 laying hens and 2-4 fattening pigs.

The day runs roughly as follows:

  • 08:00 Meeting point Ebensee landing site
  • Visit to the Ebensee weekly market
  • Joint manual milking on the goat pasture
  • Depending on the weather, a short hike from the alpine pasture to the farm (for those who have difficulty walking, there is a lift available)
  • Feeding of goat kids and fattening pigs
  • lunch
  • Egg collection from the laying hens
  • Processing the raw goat’s milk
  • Concluding together

Max. Number of participants: 10 people
Participation only after registration by email to: veranstaltung@viacampesina.at
Please let us know if you require vegetarian/vegan catering or have any other intolerances when you register.
Bring weatherproof (work) clothing and shoes! A photographer will be on site to document the day. By taking part, you automatically agree to being included in the photos.

A day at the farm https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/en/veranstaltungen/a-day-at-the-farm-3/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 00:00:39 +0000 https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/veranstaltungen/a-day-at-the-farm-3/ On the third farm visit in this series, we are able to experience a day on the farm of Monika and Karl Moser "Maurer in der Edt". They took over the family farm in 2007. The parental generation started with 2 dairy sheep. There are now 30 East Frisian dairy sheep, 4 dairy cows, 2 horses and ducks. The farm is run as a sideline with family and part-time labour as support.

After milking, which takes place twice a day, the raw milk is immediately processed by Monika into the fresh cheese specialities. The handmade cow's and sheep's milk products are available in the farm shop, Käsekastl, in some nearby grocery shops and in selected FoodCoops. An early connection to agriculture is very important to Monika and Karl. That's why they offer "School on the Farm" on their farm to familiarise children with the importance of farms.

Rebecca and Wolfgang took over their parents’ farm in 2022. Their 11 fattening oxen spend half the year on pasture and are fed hay. The farm has 13 hectares of woodland, 10 hectares of grassland and is home to a few chickens in addition to the cattle. They also run a vegetable garden, mainly for self-sufficiency, with the aim of moving into the direct marketing of meat and vegetables. At almost 200 years old, the traditional wood-fired bread oven is an absolute highlight of the farm.

The schedule for the day looks something like this:

  • 09:00 a.m.: We start with bread making
  • Round of introductions and a tour of the farm
  • Together we will light a fire in the large oven and bake the bread.
  • While the bread is baking, the process will be explained and we will learn how the turning works.
  • Prepare and eat lunch together
  • Experience calf training – learn more about handling grazing animals
  • Pruning fruit trees (approx. 2 hours) – basics, tips and practical tricks – you are also welcome to try it out yourself.
  • At the end of the day, we would like to ask you about your impressions and invite you to mulled cider or children’s punch.

The meeting point will be Ebensee railway station, from where participants will be taken by bus to the respective houses.

It is a difficult and time-consuming endeavour to put theoretical and practical knowledge about proven building techniques into practice in your own house. With our “house visits” in several selected buildings in the Salzkammergut, the workshop participants enter into an exciting dialogue with the respective builders/residents, who also report on the unintentional mistakes and hoppalas when building themselves. However, these “blurbs” are not a problem, in fact, they are almost an integral part of the concept of “Simple Smart Buildings”.

Simple Smart Buildings

What materials and techniques have been used in the past to build resilient homes? Which of these construction methods have proven to be durable, sustainable and beautiful in the long term an exploration with workshops and lectures as a participatory knowledge transfer.

Peatlands not only make an important contribution to the preservation of biodiversity, but also fulfil another function that should not be underestimated in the context of climate change: they are the most effective carbon reservoirs of all terrestrial habitats. However, moors can only fulfil this function if they have not been drained.

At the edge of the Kainischmoor, we visit an old peat cut that has been renaturalised. There it is possible to get an idea of the structure of a moor and understand how renaturalisation works. The excursion also offers an insight into an original moor landscape with rare species such as the sundew, a plant that feeds on insects, or the cranberry, which otherwise only grows in the tundra. The history of the moors in Ausseerland, from the Ice Age to the major mining projects for the salt works to the attempts at renaturalisation, is a history of land use. Moors are not a cultivated landscape and therefore man and nature face each other in a way that offers many opportunities to reflect on our approach to the latter.

About the excursion leader: Karin Hochegger, nature conservation expert and author, worked for many years as a nature conservation expert. She currently heads the Liezen district office of the Nature Conservation Association and works on renaturation projects for moors and wetlands in Ausseerland and Ennstal.
