The world of miners in the salt mine exists today as it did hundreds of years ago. The fishermen fetch their char from the crystal-clear lake, just as their ancestors did. And the guests love Altaussee as much as the first strangers who came to the village well over a hundred years ago and realized that they were not strangers here at all, but safe and at the destination of their dreams.
Altaussee has always seduced creative people, painters, writers, musicians to stay and come back. Those who follow their example are well advised to do so. The landscape welcomes its guests with lime-bright peaks, mountain forests and flower meadows or as white surfaces, heavy with snow; it lays a bright, blue lake inviting for a swim, in winter steaming in the cold or covered with bare ice at their feet and provides always new images to the eyes.

It is also good to know that Altaussee has been a climatic health resort since 1989 and that there is a graduation and Kneipp bath in the village, where brine from the Altaussee salt mountain is used.

Culture lovers are in good hands here, as are nature lovers. If you are looking for art, you will find it here and if you want to relax, you will also get your money’s worth. The “ARTmünster” project focuses on a central theme of culture: where people meet and open up, that’s where the best stories are created. It forms the interface between culture, the local population and tourism and thus strengthens awareness of the art and cultural heritage of our town. At OTELO Altmünster, creative work can be lived and experienced.

The people of Altmünster, Neukirchen and Reindlmühler enjoy the sublime natural beauty as well as local sights such as the Altmünster parish church with its Romanesque tower, the faithfully renovated Eggerhaus, the Viechtauer Heimathaus and the Ebenzweier and Traunsee castles. We invite you to take a stroll along the Esplanade, go mountain biking or hiking on a large network of trails or enjoy water sports of all kinds. The nature park, which stretches between Lake Attersee and Lake Traunsee across our municipal area, is affectionately known as “the hiking heaven at the gateway to the Höllengebirge”. Even winter sports are close by: the Hochlecken lifts have transported generations of Altmünster residents to the top.

Whatever you want to experience, you’ve come to the right place!

The town of 5,000 inhabitants in the heart of Austria convinces with top-class cultural events for every taste and a variety of handicraft workshops and manufactories, which at the same time cater to individual wishes in a tradition-conscious and contemporary way.

The Ausseerland was first mentioned in a document about 900 years ago in connection with salt production, but the history of the region goes back much further. Numerous artifacts, such as the salt deposits formed many millions of years ago, as well as cultural assets kept alive, including the Ausseer traditional costume and folk music, are displayed at the Ausseer Kammerhof Museum, known for its diversity and charm and housed in a 14th-century architectural jewel – a wonderful place to learn about the history and rich folk culture of Ausseerland.
The history of Bad Aussee is kept alive in traditions and customs and can be seen by the connoisseur in many a monument, event, spoken and sung word.

Numerous stores and inns in picturesque Bad Aussee invite you to stroll and browse and offer a wide range of products from traditional costumes, handicrafts, fashion, household, interior and delicacies to sports and floristry. Every Thursday from 7 am to 12 pm the traditional weekly market takes place. Quality products from the region can be purchased here. In many places, you can still meet the masters of their trade themselves in the Aussee handicraft businesses – be it dirndl, hat, leather pants, silk hand printing, shoe or jewelry manufactories.

The cultural calendar of Aussee offers a varied and appealing program for every age group and every taste. The annual Daffodil Festival, the largest flower festival in Austria, captivates with traditional festivities, regal elegance and numerous flower-decorated figures to marvel at. Five times a year, the Aussee Summer Nights exude the charm of the shopping town in the evenings as well, allowing locals and guests alike to stroll through the center, shop, listen to the musical setting and taste specialties from the region. In August of each year, the dancers of the Vienna State Opera Ballet Association, together with the Ausseer Bradlmusi and the Great String Orchestra of the Bürgermusikkapelle Bad Aussee, enchant their audience with a brilliant ballet performance. There are numerous other small and large events to discover in Ausseerland.
Visit the traditional handicraft businesses, let yourself be enchanted by top-class ballet productions, discover interesting facts and extraordinary treasures of the region in the Kammerhof Museum and enjoy the varied leisure activities in Bad Aussee.

Bad Goisern is a World Heritage Site and, together with Hallstatt, Obertraun and Gosau, looks back on 7000 years of eventful history, shaped by salt mining. The unique thing about it – there is no other place in the world where mining has been continuously documented over such a long period of time and is still relevant today. In the glorious times of salt mining, Goisern had always played the role of a supply center, be it with wood or food. Protestantism has left its mark on the place and has fallen on nourishing soil. Old Bible smugglers’ paths and secret churches still bear witness to how the Protestant faith found its way into the Inner Salzkammergut.

Bad Goisern has about 7500 inhabitants, each and every one of them an original. Just like the landscape – rugged mountains and in front of them fields and meadows that shine bright green in the summer sun and make the air smell fragrant. The Hallstättersee in the south together with the Krippenstein provide a unique panorama and great photo motifs. Numerous hiking trails and mountain bike trails lead to the most beautiful views, many of them with a direct view of the Dachstein glacier.

There is even the profile of a Native American perceived in the shape of the Goiserer Kalmberg. Again, one of those contrasts. Not so regarding the culture & tradition, which is special to Bad Goisern and is partly cultivated for centuries with particular straightness. Five brass bands, four fire departments and countless clubs ensure an eventful village life. Music festivals, vintage car rides, beer tents, mountain bike races, circus weeks for children, craft markets, chamois hunting days, ski jumping cups and much more fill a varied calendar of events.

The name Goisern is known in the German-speaking world, not least through Hubert von Goisern. One of the town’s best-known exports, if you will. Before Hubert, Goisern was a household name for the coarsely sewn Goiserer Schuh. And fortunately it still is, thanks to the industrious master shoemaker Phillip Schwarz, who still makes the shoes by hand in his workshop. Musical craftsmanship creating violins and other instruments is also an important part of Bad Goisern. Especially where every year in September hundreds of violin players come together for the Aufgeigen in the Kirchengasse and celebrate the violin music. These are just a few glimpses of the craftsmanship that exists in the village. Traditional handicrafts can be found in concentrated form in the village center, and Neuwildenstein Castle is home to the Hand.Werk.Haus. Salzkammergut is accommodated. Changing exhibitions on two floors and an exquisite store on the first floor are included.

Today Bad Goisern is not only a place of hard work, because that is what the people of the Salzkammergut have always been good at, it is a place of recreation, culture and craftsmanship. Traditions are lived and nature is appreciated. Much of this can be experienced in 2024 and should not be missed.

Bad Ischl is … To complete this sentence is not so easy. Since Bad Ischl is many things: imperial town, European Cultural Capital 2024, congress, spa and shopping town – and all this in the heart of the Salzkammergut.

Imperial summer resort

Bad Ischl and the summer resort, both simply belong together. Visitors and guests can expect a potpourri of experiences and impressions: The beautiful area invites you to hikes and bike tours in the mountain and lake region of the Salzkammergut. Here guests can follow in the footsteps of Sisi and Lehár. A varied cultural offer and beautiful places and sights invite you to stay, visit and participate.

Culture is the new salt – Cultural Capital 2024

Bad Ischl and the Salzkammergut region are “European Capital of Culture 2024”. For the first time in the history of the European Capital of Culture, it will take place in the inner Alpine region.
“This offers Bad Ischl and the Salzkammergut the chance for our town/region to become the equivalent of a major city. The already lively cultural scene and high quality of life are to be increased. It’s about mobility and digitalization and, above all, revitalizing existing properties,” says Mayor Ines Schiller. And Bad Ischl is preparing for 2024 with full zeal and commitment.

The emperor’s new gardens – the parks

Bad Ischl is known and loved for its numerous parks and flower gardens.
This is also due to the fact that in 2015, the state horticultural show was held here and a great deal of money was invested in garden maintenance. And it was worth it! Bad Ischl was awarded for its commitment. The town won first prize in the Entente Florale 2016, a European competition to enhance the quality of life and living. And more. Bad Ischl received the best rating ever awarded to a participant. No wonder, then, that people here are so incredibly proud of their attractive parks.
One highlight is the Sisipark. It was completely redesigned as part of the State Garden Show and offers numerous families the opportunity to spend time and play with their children.

Awarded family and child friendly community

Bad Ischl has already been certified several times by Unicef and the Federal Chancellery as a family- and child-friendly community. Due to the large number of different childcare facilities, the compatibility of family and work is to be evaluated again and again. The range of playgrounds has been steadily expanded in recent years. And Bad Ischl has done even more to expand the range of exercise for their small and large population, whether skate park, beach volleyball court, climbing gyms, tennis courts, park pool, the choice is really large. For reading and playing fun, the libraries of the parish, where you can borrow books and games for a small fee.

The Styrian municipal structure reform brought about a merger of the “old” municipalities of Pichl-Kainisch, Tauplitz and Bad Mitterndorf. The municipality has three kindergartens, three elementary schools and a new secondary school. About 230 companies are located in Bad Mitterndorf, with many one-person and micro businesses, some medium-sized companies and also industrial enterprises. Club life is very active with 46 associations. Many famous personalities, among others from sports and culture, originate from Bad Mitterndorf. Ski jumper Wolfgang Loitzl, Hubert Neuper or Conchita Wurst – to name three examples. In addition to many natural jewels and the lived tradition, Bad Mitterndorf is especially known for the ski jump “Kulm”.

Ebensee is proud of its diverse cultural landscape. Countless UNESCO-designated intangible cultural treasures gather in a very small area – carnival, Glöcklerlauf, landscape nativity scenes, songbird catching – and have established their roots here. Traditional costume associations, brass bands, museum culture, pop music, art, as well as socio-cultural institutions – all find a place in Ebensee. Zeitkultur sends out a special beacon signal with its cultural center in Schulgasse. The town twinning with the Tuscan town of Prato is also very important.

Gmunden has a great history, was Emperor Maximilian’s favorite place for chamois hunting, focal point of the Peasants’ Wars, seat of the Habsburgs and Hanoverians, artists’ meeting place of the imperial and royal summer resorts. But this is not something to rest on. For more than a hundred years, the home of the world-famous Gmundner Keramik and the Laufen company has also been a hot spot for the ceramic art avant-garde. The Salzkammergut Festwochen are considered one of the hottest multi-genre festivals in the country, and the old Stadtgarten is currently being turned into an art quarter for the contemporary and the “gmunden.photo” and the Musical Frühling in Gmunden.

Gosau is a real natural jewel in the Dachstein Salzkammergut.
Yet Gosau am Dachstein does not resemble a typical village at all, because the valley stretches over 14 kilometers, to the Gosauseen lakes, where you can look down on the Dachstein glacier.
Mountain lovers, bikers and families find themselves right in the middle of the natural spectacle.
In summer and winter you can quickly reach lofty heights or one of the many alpine pastures.
In the valley itself, the neat houses and guest houses are spread out, in between there is space: space and air for recreation and outdoor action everywhere.

Grünau is located in the heart of the Alm valley, which provides unique excursion destinations with true natural jewels. As a founding member of the “Mountain Villages”, sustainable tourism and an appreciative approach to nature are at the forefront. If you want to learn more about the diverse flora and fauna, the Cumberland Wildlife Park and the Konrad Lorenz Research Center are the perfect places to go. This kind of nature vacation becomes especially valuable and interesting with the offers of WALDNESS and Naturschauspiel. In the cold season, the Kasberg becomes a popular family ski area for amateur and professional athletes and invites you to unique winter experiences.

The Grundlsee and its eponymous municipality are characterized above all by the beautiful landscape, its population and the love of customs and tradition. Life on the shores of the Styrian Sea is characterized by many customs that young and old celebrate together and help shape the annual cycle. Culture is lived. The beautiful old farmhouses, as well as the architectural style of our time, which blends excellently with the old buildings, have always characterized the special flair of Grundlsee and Gößl.

First mentioned in 1188, the place was already discovered in the 19th century by some artists for the summer resort. This is also how Erherzog Johann got to know and love not only the area, but also his later wife Anna Plochl.

Hallstatt is a small market town that is very much characterized by its millennia of salt production, which still takes place in Hallstatt's salt mountain, the Plassen.
Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt Hallstatt

In earlier times, the salt and timber industry was the main occupation of the people in this cultural landscape.

In addition, there has been a technical school for almost one hundred and fifty years. Founded in 1873 as a wood technical school, this traditional and nationally very recognized and appreciated school was further developed forty years ago into the higher technical federal school (HTBLA) Hallstatt. 450 young people, who come from all over Austria and neighboring countries, receive high-quality technical training in woodworking, interior design, furniture design, wood and stringed instrument making, boat building and restoration techniques.

The many tourists who come from all over the world are occasionally a burden for the locals, but on the other hand they are also of great economic importance. They have been responsible for the positive development of the small town during the last fifteen years. Due to the geographical location, almost no industrial companies that would offer good jobs are located in the region “Inner Salzkammergut”, an area very far away from the traffic arteries (highways). Therefore, tourism has become all the more important for several decades.

As a tourist community, Hallstatt has enjoyed a steadily increasing demand for years, and guests from all over the world spend their vacations in the small market town. Until the outbreak of the Covid pandemic in 2020, there were about 145,000 guest nights.
The outbreak of the pandemic led to the cessation of international air travel. On the one hand, the absence of the many international guests “got rid” of a problem for the market community from one minute to the next, which had occupied the inhabitants massively for many years, but on the other hand it meant a great threat to the existence of many entrepreneurs and their employees and triggered justified worries about the future.
Last year, in 2022, the number of overnight stays already approached the 100,000 mark. Together with the many day tourists, both the community and its population as well as the businesses achieve an enormous added value.

The construction of the “Heritage Hotel Hallstatt”, in which the market town of Hallstatt is a shareholder with 49%, was a very important and decisive impulse for a positive development of quality tourism in 2009. The aim was to increase the number of overnight stays and thus the added value in the town.
This marked the beginning of year-round tourism for hotels and restaurants, the Salzwelten as operator of the visitor mine and funicular railroad, and the Hallstättersee shipping company. Until fifteen years ago, there was only one season, which lasted from Easter to late summer. In media reports at that time Hallstatt was described as “the dying village”.
Since then, the local businesses, but also the public authorities, have made large investments, and many new jobs have been created in the village, both in the federal school and in the tourism sector.

With its positive business results, the “Salzwelten”, the tourism company of the Salinen Austria AG, contributes significantly to the fact that the alpine, very cost-intensive salt production still exists in Austria. This also applies to the financing of archaeological research at and in the Hallstatt Salt Mine, which is also gratefully supported financially by the Province of Upper Austria and the federal government.

The prehistoric tunnels, in which important found pieces are constantly coming to light, have to be maintained at great expense in order to remain accessible. Along with the famous burial ground at Salzberghochtal, these historic galleries were one of the main reasons why the “Hallstatt-Dachstein-Salzkammergut” region was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. It is undoubtedly a unique selling point worldwide that in Hallstatt a product, in our case the food and industrial product salt, has been mined in one and the same place for over seven thousand years, right up to the present day. This has been worked on and documented for decades by the archaeologists of the Natural History Museum (NHM) in Vienna, who operate a scientific research center at the Salzberghochtal in Hallstatt.

A place with a wide view. The municipal area covers 28 square kilometers. The highest elevations are the “Kogl” with the “Himmelreich” (767 meters above sea level) and the “Haberg/Oberriedl” (807 meters above sea level) as well as in the east the long stretched “Feichtenberg” (664 meters above sea level). From these elevations one can enjoy fascinating views of the surrounding mountains – over the Tote Gebirge and the Traunstein area in the south to the Höllengebierge in the southwest. The view from west to north extends from the Hausruck to the plains of central Upper Austria, sometimes even as far as the Mühlviertel and Bohemia. To the west, the forested Hausrückhöhe and the Höllengebirge form the horizon. Kirchham is crossed by the two “Laudach rivers”. The “Outer Laudach” rises in the area around the Traunstein near the Laudachsee. The “Inner (also “Dürre”) Laudach” draws its water from the wooded hills of the Hagenmühle district.

High quality of life. The well-developed infrastructure (local water supply, sewer, road and local heating network, sports and recreational facilities) as well as a varied and intact cultural landscape lovingly tended by farmers contribute significantly to the recognized high quality of life and living. Living in the countrysideDespite its central location, Kirchham is literally surrounded by greenery. Old and also new paths connect lush meadows, fields, natural shrub hedges and forest patches with the settlement areas. Thus, the people of Kirchham have a recreational area within walking distance, which provides a special experience of nature for children and adults. In addition to its scenic beauty, Kirchham has a very well-functioning village community, which is characterized by an extremely active club, cultural and sports life.

The Traunseebahn connects… Kirchham with the district capital Gmunden and the market town Vorchdorf, and it is a convenient means of transport for students, professionals as well as for leisure travelers. Modern trains stop every 30 minutes at Kirchham, Kirchham Ort, Sportplatz, Laizing and Eisengattern. The attractive Park & Ride facility at the sports field has 54 marked parking spaces including an efficient e-charging station and a covered bicycle parking facility.

History. The name Kirchham appears in old writings in very different spellings. One reads “Kürhrimb”, “Khihamb”, Khirichham”, “Chiricheim” or “Kirchheim”. Already in the middle of the 4th century before Christ Celts populated our region. Immediately before the birth of Christ our area came to the Roman Empire. In the 7th century Kirchham belonged to the Duchy of Bavaria before it was assigned to the Duchy of Austria from 1200. The first mention goes back to Pope Innocent IV, who mentions the Laurentius Chapel in “Chirichheim” in a document addressed to the Kremsmünster Abbey on 14.06.1249. Since March 17, 1849, Kirchham has been an independent municipality and the number of inhabitants rose from 1,462 in 1869 to 2,241 as of September 30, 2022.

In the city at the gateway to the Salzkammergut region, living industrial history becomes visible and the spirit of innovation tangible. The water - the Traun - is a lifeline and has always played an essential role in the development of the city.

With just under 10,000 inhabitants, Laakirchen is the youngest town in Upper Austria and the Capital of Culture region. Laakirchen experienced a social, cultural and economic upswing with the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century. In earlier times, the Traun served as a transport route for the salt trade, but later it was used for energy generation and paper production in the villages of Danzermühl and Steyrermühl. Thus, Laakirchen developed into an interesting business and investment location with many innovative and globally active companies, well-connected small and medium-sized enterprises as well as committed individual businesses.

Laakirchen is a hot spot of living industrial culture and is to be further developed as a competence center in the region.

In the halls of the “Old Factory”, industrial history is still alive today in the Paper Worlds and the spirit of days long gone can be felt. Old machines that are still fully functional, a lithography workshop, a fire department and printing museum, a gallery, the cultural and event center and the papermaking museum are all united on the museum peninsula in the village of Steyrermühl. The exhibition presents historical as well as contemporary topics related to paper production, highlights aspects of industrial history and the importance of the Traun River as a supplier of resources and energy. Unique in Europe is the true-to-the-original replica of Nicolas Louis Robert’s first paper machine, which can be marveled at. In addition, the art of hand papermaking is practiced in the museum to this day. Visitors have the opportunity to make their own paper.

The cultural and event center “ALFA”, created on the museum peninsula, combines industry and handicraft as part of our culture and art as an expression of contemporary culture. The halls of the “Alte Fabrik” provide the ideal setting for cabaret, top-class concerts, readings, arts and crafts markets, exhibitions and much more. The flair of the location is very popular with both artists and guests. A visit to the Papierwelten can also be wonderfully combined with a walk along the idyllic banks of the Traun River and a detour to the nearby “Gschröf” (a show power plant) or a visit to the playground in front of the ALFA.

Offers for generations in intact nature are part of our culture.

For many years, special attention has been paid in the city to the promotion of children and young people, care for senior citizens and sports. Thus, Laakirchen’s residents as well as visitors can choose from a wide repertoire of possibilities. The sports and recreation center offers facilities such as an outdoor pool with a 70-meter water slide, diving tower, etc., indoor and outdoor tennis courts, skate park, climbing wall, athletics facility, soccer, fistball, beach volleyball courts, fun court, asphalt track, badminton and archery hall. Recreational activities such as walking, hiking, biking are also available in the beautiful, gently rolling landscape of the Alpine foothills. Along the signposted hiking and biking trails, which often offer a beautiful view of the Northern Alps panorama, restaurants and cider taverns invite you to take a leisurely break. The Traun River, which is famous throughout Europe for its clean water and varied river sections, is a fly-fishing El Dorado.

The Gmöser Moor in Laakirchen is also unique and worth a visit. It is one of the few moors in the foothills of the Alps in Upper Austria. It was formed after the Mindel ice age from a dead ice hole. Today it is a nature reserve with rare flora and fauna that can be admired along a circular path.

Laakirchen is a town where economy, art, nature and social responsibility are well combined and part of our culture.

In the community of 740 inhabitants on the southern shore of Lake Hallstatt, visitors can expect spectacular viewing platforms such as the 5fingers, a wide network of biking and hiking trails, a variety of sights and attractions for the whole family.

In addition to Lake Hallstättersee, the impressive mountain world and its show caves inside the Dachstein massif – the fascinating Dachstein Riesen Ice Cave, the massive Mammoth Cave and the underground white water spectacles in the Koppenbrüller Cave – this landscape is characterized by a cultural continuity that spans thousands of years.

In the idyllic Koppenwinkel, natural beauty awaits and springs arise directly from the Dachstein plateau.

In winter, deep-snow freaks, snowboarders and snowshoe walkers as well as “hut sitters” and sun worshippers meet in the Krippenstein freesports arena. In addition, the ski area on the Krippenstein offers the longest ski run in the Eastern Alps with 11 kilometers.

And in the valley, 14 km of cross-country ski trails and cleared winter hiking trails await winter sports enthusiasts.

Independence since 1920!

Obertraun was first mentioned – as “Obere Traun” – in 1325 in the Upper Austrian Stiftsurbarium Traunkirchen. But already 2,000 years earlier – according to scattered finds – the area was not unknown. Since a magnificent bronze sword was found below the Däumelkogel (1150-950 B.C.), an Egyptian bronze deity as well as a Roman bronze helmet in the Koppental. The settlement between the depths of Lake Hallstatt and the steep Koppen walls was closely connected with the Hallstatt salt mining industry. The Traunauen and the Koppen provided abundant wood for the enormous wood consumption of the brew pans and for the extraction of charcoal for the salt works forges.

In 1920 the time had come! The Obertraun village representatives applied to the Hallstatt municipal council for secession for various reasons and decided to go their own ways.

Pettenbach is a very popular residential community with a high quality of life. Meanwhile, more than 5,400 people have their center of life here. They appreciate the natural environment and the diverse local offerings.
Pettenbach’s central location is particularly noteworthy. Surrounded by three highway connections; or by bus and train, one can reach all important cities or local recreation centers in Upper Austria within a very short time. This is not only of great value for those seeking recreation or employment, but also the business community appreciates Pettenbach’s central location. More than 150 commercial enterprises, including several large international companies, provide work and prosperity. Characteristic for the village, however, is above all the rural structure of the approximately 200 full and part-time farms.
The liveliness of our village is characterized by more than 60 associations. By allowing new things in connection with lived tradition and customs, the feeling of togetherness is strengthened. The many committed and voluntarily active people are an important, supporting pillar of our society. The social life in Pettenbach is also enriched by many sporting activities and cultural event highlights: the Leonhardiritt – one of the largest traditional events in Upper Austria, the Mother’s Day Cabaret, the Benedikti Market – a craft market with over 70 regional and international exhibitors in the beautiful ambience of the village center, the Gstanzl singa, the Christmas market with an extensive program, excellent theater performances, concerts of all musical genres, church days, carnival and firefighter festivals.
Pettenbach is located at the entrance to the Almtal, embedded in a beautiful natural landscape and as such offers many leisure and hiking opportunities. The paths lead through partly untouched nature and are suitable for all age groups. The Alm is a natural jewel – its uniqueness is appreciated by those seeking recreation. Today, however, the river also plays a major role in sustainable energy production. This can be explored at the Kronawettwehr show power station with a nature and hydropower trail.

Austria’s only museum of writing, the Bartlhaus, is located in Pettenbach. It is dedicated to writing in the form of handwriting and printing. Exhibitions show contemporary, Austrian and international calligraphy and bookplates. The printing workshop is a special experience, as are the writing courses that take place in the scriptorium. The local museum, which presents a collection of historical furnishings and utensils from the area, is also housed in the Bartlhaus.
In addition, there are many other places worth seeing in Pettenbach, for example the late Gothic, three- and two-nave parish churches of Pettenbach and Magdalenaberg with beautiful frescoes and Baroque altar furnishings and the pilgrimage church of Heiligenleithen plus Leonhardibründl. The Seisenburg ruin, formerly a mighty Renaissance castle, is an attractive excursion and recreation area thanks to the preservation of some of its foundations – as is the Peace Cross on Oberkaibling and the alpine shore trail from Almspitz to Almsee, which is over 50 km long in total and offers some nice (active) rest areas in Pettenbach.

The community of Roitham am Traunfall with its approximately 2000 inhabitants is located directly on the Traun River in the foothills of the Alps, about halfway between Gmunden and Wels. Roitham am Traunfall is the northernmost community of the district of Gmunden. In terms of traffic, Roitham am Traunfall is well connected by the federal highway 144. Along the southern border of the municipality runs the Westautobahn with the freeway exits Laakirchen Ost and West.

Roitham “a place where it is worth living”. Many jobs, an active club life and the proximity to mountains and lakes are offered in the community. Young families should be attracted by the new, modern elementary school and the generously equipped kindergarten. Many age-appropriate apartments have been built in the village center.

History: It is no longer possible to reconstruct exactly when the first settlement in the Roitham am Traunfall area took place, but there is circumstantial evidence that the first settlers cultivated the land here in the 8th and 9th centuries at the latest. In 1191 Roitham am Traunfall is mentioned in a document for the first time. The name “Roitham” is composed of the Old High German “riutan” (=roden) and the Germanic suffix “-ham” (=home) and thus means home on cleared land. In the early centuries, not only great spiritual and secular lords, such as the Traungau Counts from the Wels-Lambach dynasty and the Benedictine monastery of Lambach, had their possessions in Roitham am Traunfall, but also smaller knightly dynasties such as the “Rocher”, who gave their names to the villages of Außerroh and Innerroh. The independent cadastral communities of Außerpühret, Deising, Kemating, and Roitham merged in 1861 to form the political community of Roitham. The municipality of Roitham am Traunfall belonged to the district of Vöcklabruck until 1949. It was incorporated into the district of Gmunden in that year.

Municipal coat of arms: By decision of the Upper Austrian provincial government of November 18, 1985, Roitham am Traunfall is granted the use of the municipal coat of arms. The Traunfall bridge and a Kaplan turbine are depicted on a red background in the upper part. The Kaplan turbine refers to the Traunfall power station, which was one of the largest of its kind in Central Europe at the time of its construction (1902). The silver beam, broken with a right step, represents the Traunfall. The golden shell on the green part of the coat of arms refers to the patron saint of our parish church, St. James the Elder.

Scharnstein is located in the heart of the Alm valley. Historical sites and wonderful places in nature invite you to hike and linger. Excellent gastronomy and stores as well as excellent businesses characterize the village. Scharnstein was first mentioned in a document in 1204. At that time, the Counts of Rebgau had already begun building Scharnstein Castle, the remains of which (Scharnstein Castle Ruins) are an extremely popular destination for excursions. The history of the castle is available via audio guide on site.

In the district of Viechtwang you will find a wonderful neo-Romanesque church dedicated to St. John the Evangelist. The history of Scharnstein is very much influenced by the Jörger family, who in 1584 acquired the Scharnstein dominion, which included the castle, which had burned down a few years earlier, and the newly built Scharnstein Castle.

Helmart Jörger founded five scythe hammers on the alpine pasture from the year 1588 and laid the foundation for scythe production, which reached its heyday through the Redtenbacher company. After the 1st World War, more than one million scythes were sold from Scharnstein all over the world. The tradition of scythe production is still alive today in the Geyerhammer Scythe Museum. In the densely wooded region, forestry is also of great importance. In the Almtal forest school, knowledge is imparted on all aspects of the forest.

Steinbach am Attersee is the largest municipality in the district of Vöcklabruck in terms of area with 61.8 km² with 904 inhabitants thus small but mighty – rarely has this saying fit better. As a guest you become part of the village character of Steinbach am Attersee. Everybody knows everybody, people help each other. At the same time, there is a wealth of attractions and experiences that larger towns would love to have. Steinbach is located at an altitude of 509 meters on the shores of Lake Attersee, with the Höllengebirge mountains to the east.

Pure nature – mountaineering village, nature park community and star park community
Located at the foot of the Höllengebirge, the mountains play an important role in Steinbach am Attersee. Not least because of this, Steinbach am Attersee bears three important distinctions as a mountaineering village, a nature park municipality in the Attersee-Traunsee Nature Park and a full-fledged star park municipality in Austria’s first star park.
As a nature park community and star park community, special emphasis is placed upon the picturesque nature. This can be admired not only during the day, but also at night: Numerous stars and even the Milky Way can be seen with the naked eye in the right weather conditions.
In addition to the well-known peaks and tours in the Höllengebirge, there is the Attersee Klettersteig Mahdlgupf, the bouldering area Forstamt and the 50 meter high Nixenfall.

In the course of a project of the mountaineering villages, twenty relaxation loungers found their place in the mountaineering village Steinbach am Attersee at various vantage points. These are double loungers, which were made by local carpenters, and are intended to offer locals as well as guests plenty of space for rest and relaxation as well as for “Sterndal gucken”.

From the high mountains into the cool water
Once back at the lake, countless offers await you. The various diving entry points – such as the notorious black bridge – attract divers. You can swim less deep in the solar beach pool at the lake. The large sunbathing lawn, a baby pool and a heated pool with a long water slide guarantee plenty of variety. Even better is to do your laps in the dreamlike clear Attersee.

Culture for all
No less a person than Gustav Mahler chose Steinbach am Attersee as a vacation spot in his day. In some places in the village that time comes alive again – especially during the annual Gustav Mahler Festival. Also, during the rest of the year Steinbach´s cultural calendar is well filled. From traditional events of the Trachtenverein and the Musikkapelle to classical music as part of the Steinbach Philharmonic Weeks, there is a colorful mix. Or you take a leisurely walk in the footsteps of great artistic personalities who have lived and visited Steinbach and Weißenbach. Gustav Mahler, Friedrich Gulda, Franz von Schönthan, Charlotte Wolter, Hedwig Bleibtreu, Gustav Klimt – they were all inspired by Lake Attersee and its fascinating surroundings. On the 2.5 km long and easily walkable circular trail, display signs provide interesting information.

Traunkirchen is a center of attraction for guests who appreciate cultivated hospitality, multifaceted customs and the enchanting landscape of the Salzkammergut.
The idyllic town center, situated on a peninsula jutting out from the western shore, is dominated by the impressive backdrop of the Traunstein (1691 m) and has always been a favorite motif of landscape painters.
Numerous historical sights such as the parish church with the fisherman’s pulpit, the Johannesberg natural monument, the tranquil cultural trail VIA HISTORICA with texts by Alfred Komarek and idyllic vantage points with a partly cultic past are waiting to be discovered.
In Traunkirchen, however, not only culture and landscape can be experienced in the most beautiful way; here, a colorful world of leisure awaits active people.
A well-marked network of paths opens up a charming hiking area. There are large freely accessible bathing areas such as the Bräuwiese or the Badeinsel and much more.

Unterach is the only village on the Attersee to have a bypass road, which has preserved the charm and character of the village. Due to the mild climate, the only sweet chestnut forest north of the Alps grows here.

In the center of Unterach, the Lederermayerhaus, an old farmhouse from the 17th/18th century, is located. The listed building has been authentically preserved in an extraordinary way. In the rear part of the building there is still the small stable, which was used to house some farm animals. In the interior, the artistic stucco work on the second floor is significant, alongside other structurally as well as folklorically remarkable details such as the front door as well as the house painting above it on the facade, which has not yet been restored and therefore still has the original expressiveness.

Vorchdorf has a wide range of cultural and active opportunities with 50 associations. In addition to the functioning pub culture, the beer to the Salzkammergut (Eggenberger) and a lively musical offer, it is above all the Kitzmantelfabrik, the Museum of the Regions and the gallery in the castle Hochhaus, which bring the cultural offer to a high level. And all this with good connections by train, highway or Almuferweg.
